Great hostel, just far enough away but close

This is a wonderful hostel to stay in. Nice courtyard, beds are all right, full kitchen, computers, great people, close to everything you need. The bathrooms are sparse, but work and are clean. They have a washer and drier. Very secure feeling. I had alot of fun here. Beware, the square near buy is a total tourist trap, avoid shops and eating here. Metro is very close. As is Saint Suplice which has a number of bars, and China Town, all within walking distance

    Directions: In old montreal.

  • Interesting Youth Hostel

I did not stay in this hostel. I had a job interview once here and I had the opportunity to look around the place. For budget or youth travellers, this place must be great (especially in summer).
It felt like the staff really cared about the decoration, making the hostel look more like a traditionnal auberge. It's located in the Old Montreal, a safe and beautiful area.

Unique Quality: Offers large dorms or 2/4 beds private rooms.

    Directions: Métro Champs-De-Mars

We have a youth hostel that is supposed to be very good, it won some big awards. It is right in downtown Montreal. Here's the link: http://www.hostellingmontreal.com/en/home.aspx
And you can contact them directly at (514) 843-3317 or 1-866-843-3317 (toll free within North America) or by email at info@hostellingmontreal.com

And here's a link to a web site that gives you info and access to other hostels in Montreal: http://www.travellerspoint.com/hostels-en-ci-823.html
So, good luck and I hope that you will enjoy your stay here!

it maybe worth while to invest in a hostel card as you get discounts if you are a member. http://www.hihostels.com/

If you are looking for cheap hostels, you should look on St-Hubert & St- Denis Street (next to the bus station) You should be able to get something really cheap. Try Auberge du voyageur, Auberge St-Denis, Hotel Taj Mahal,... Also, on Sherbrooke Street East you have some small hostels (Hotel de Paris, ...)

Check out www.hostels.com, they have a good list of the hostels in Montreal with pictures, and they have ratings from people who have stayed at each place (the ratings are from people who have booked through hostels.com, but at least for the places I've stayed the ratings were pretty accurate.) Montreal has some very good hostels, there is the HI hostel that others have mentioned above, but there are also some very good independently owned ones in some great parts of the city like Old Montreal and the Plateau, and these are in good neighborhoods, not seedy areas. I would personally recommend Le Gite du Plateau Mont Royal on Sherbrooke St.; La Maison du Patriote or Le Sous-bois in Old Montreal(both under same ownership); and Alternative Hostel of Old Montreal. I would not recommend Hotel & Auberge de Paris, except as a last resort, it is not like a real hostel, rather it's just beds in the basement of a small hotel.
