staying in montreal, onre night.

by Alej88

Hi I'm from Colombia and spending a month in Toronto. I, with some friends would like to go to Montreal, visit the Cirque Du Soleil (big time fans), and stay a night in the city. However we are expected to spend little money in that trip, so I would like to know if you could tell me where to find a cheap place to stay near "Under the Grand Chapiteau, Quays of the Old Port of Montreal".

As a side point, I have everything planned on maps, however my friends doesn't believe me when i say that trains from Toronto can get to the central station in Montréal, am I wrong?

Hey to answer your first question, there aren't many cheap places right near Old Montreal. However if you look further into downtown near St. Catherines St. or St. Laurent there are a bunch of small hotels and you could even find deals at the downtown Holiday Inn. As for the train, if you take Via Rail, the station in Montreal is right downtown so don't listen to your friends.

as a side not and as a Torontonian, Cirque de Soliel is doing a free show in Toronto next weekend at the Harbourfront Centre for the Luminato Festival so you might not need to spend all that money unless you really want to go to Montreal

cheers,

Prices downtown or near Old Mtl are quite high (or they unrecommended, vagrants and drugs). But it`s easy to walk and an excell subway system. Search Youth Hostels and YMCA. The cheapest for a couple that I know of is attached to Oratoire St Joseph (50$ with breakfast). You`ll love Montreal!

Travel Tips for Montreal

Does This Train Stop at the Eiffel Tower?

by tpal

And you thought this was my Montreal page...well, it is!

And no, this not the last stop of the Paris Metro. In fact, this is the Square Victoria Station of the Montreal Metro system. The famous Metropolitain subway entrance designed by Hector Guimard for the Paris system in 1900 was donated to the City of Montreal by the Règie Autonome des Transports Parisiens (RATP) in 1967 to commemorate Guimard's 100th birthday.

Its initial installation was less than stellar. Local code requirements stipulated that the entrance had to be wider than the original and therefore the distinctive Metropolitain sign could not be installed. Over time it fell into serious disrepair and was in danger of being lost. Finally, in 2001 efforts to save the precious gift were successful. The components were disassembled, restored and re-installed over a new opening which had received a waiver in the building codes allowing the narrower entrance.

I have long been a huge Art Nouveau fan and this work of Hector Guimard, along with the works of Antonio Gaudi and Charles Rennie Macintosh, has, for me, always been the pinnacle of the genre. Next, I must see this in its original setting...Paris :-)

Canada is the land of ever changing money. Maybe is it to make itself distinct from it Southern neighbors, you could most likely get over a dozen and a half different quarters. Money is colorful and changes every few years because of counterfeit. Sure hiking is not what Montreal is known for, but if around and need some exercice, go to St-Hilaire mount for a few hours of hiking and it will put you back in shape. It is 30 minutes drive from Montreal on the South Shore.

The hearth of Old Montreal, the Jacques-Cartier plaza is hosting restaurants and bars, opened with terasses during fair weather. Visit the docks and activities presented there. Skating on the bassin located between the East docks during the winter.

How a Canadian Bargain turns sour

by tuoedisni1

If you buy something in Quebec, expect it to be taxed twice - once for the Goods and Services tax (GST) of 7% and then the Provincial tax (PST) of 7.5%.
And for hotels, add a 3% lodging tax.
(As of July 1, 2006 the GST is dropping to 6%)

Example: here is a hotel bill I received:
Base price : 225.00
Lodging tax (3%) 6.75
G.S.T: 16.23
P.S.T: 18.60
Total 266.58

But there is good news! If you are a non-resident, you can obtain a refund for the GST (not the PST, sorry). I have listed the website for more info.
