  • 3-Storey Auberge off Ste-Anne - Quebec
    3-Storey Auberge off
    Ste-Anne

All of my previous trips to Quebec City had been due to either business meetings or just a one-night stop-over on the way home from Montreal or points further west. This time, my wife's sister (Pauline) was visiting us from Cornwall, England. We had to throw a little extra something into the mix, so we said let's spend a few days in Quebec City. No point in sparing the expense, or 'let's throw the cat another goldfish' as we would say in the Maritimes! We booked ourselves into a very nice Auberge (Inn) located in the heart of the walled-section of Quebec City.

This photo shows the pedestrian part of Ste Anne street running in front of Auberge Place D'Armes, with its small oval black sign. Adjoining it on the ground floor is a nice little restaurant, the Pain Beni, with its red sign hanging out. We were located on the top floor overlooking the street and the Chateau Frontenac hotel across the square.

Our bill, with taxes, came to C$350 (US$280) for three people for two nights. This included the extra person charge of C$20 per night.

Our room at Auberge Place D'Armes was very comfortable and well appointed. The main bed was great for a nice slumber and, in European style, the TV was hung from the ceiling on a swivel arrangement to provide more useable space in the walking part of the room. To the right of the bed was a small washbasin and a full bath/shower with a dividing curtain from the remainder of the room.

One afternoon, while the ladies browsed the nearby shops, I relaxed on the bed watching Discovery Channel. I was amazed to stumble across a very interesting 1-hour program on how the new mega-bridge to Bordeaux, France was constructed. It made me think of VT-member 'JLBG' and his page on the project!

The other end of the room featured a real brick wall and contained a small couch which doubled as a pull-out bed. To the left on this photo, another very small room contained the toilet with a second washbasin and mirror. Our view out over the Place D'Armes toward the Chateau Frontenac was through two sets of windows to the right.

Since the Auberge is located on the pedestrian-only part of Ste. Anne street, we had no problems at all with noise. I imagine this would be a great spot during the summer months, with the sidewalk tables already set up on the street (but, this time, it was too cold and windy for anyone to use them) along with the stands of various artisans!

The final thing that impressed me with the Auberge was the great interior decorating! As we trudged up the flights of stairs (no elevators here!) to our second floor room, I was impressed by the soft carpet floors and the rich colours of the walls in the soft lighting. Here, my flash has brought everything in the hallway out much more brilliantly than what you will actually experience. It must be nice to step into a place like this after a cold night out on the town during Quebec City's annual Winter Carnival in February!!

I could also say 3 days in paradise. The room in the new museum part built as we where told in 1730, beautiful stone walls, nice furniture, really great bathroom and even if we where on the street very silent at night. Friendly staff and nice breakfast in their restaurant. I will surely recommend it to my friends

In front of the Chateau Frontenac, I took my bath looking at it... friendly staff, free Wi-fi, free breafast

The Auberge Place d' Armes is a lovely if pricey hotel that is located about as central as you can get in the old city of Quebec. The hotel occupies a two attached buildings, one dating from the 1750's and the other dating from 1840's. The rooms are very charming if my Canadian standards they are very small. The bathroom was in fact miniscule. The staff here was pretty friendly and very helpful when I needed them. Like so much of Quebec City, the hotel has a very European flavour.

The cost of the room includes breakfast which is actually rare in Canada. There is a well reviewed restaurant on the ground floor.

The Auberge Place d'Armes is a quaint little hotel located within the walls of Old Quebec City. The hotel, located in a historical building over 200 years old, feels more like an old home or a cozy bed & breakfast with its tiny winding staircase, narrow, carpeted hallways and dark wood finish.

The room that I stayed in was fairly small. The shower (with glass door) was located at the foot of the bed, so if you are traveling with people who don't normally see your bits, you might want to reconsider. Even with traveling with someone who does see your bits regularly I still think it feels a bit like a strange peep show.

Perfect location. Steps away from the Chateau Frontenac, the St. Lawrence River and numerous shops and restaurants, the Auberge Place d'Armes was a hotel that served its purpose.

Great experience at this beautiful boutique hotel! The best of both worlds - true old world charm in a 200 year-old building with some of the latest amenities. Hallways and rooms have period decor and antique furniture, exposed brick walls, and the added convenience of newly updated fixtures. Rooms were clean, well aired, and the bedding was well appointed. The complimentary continental breakfast at the trendy bistro (Le Pain Beni) was worth doing every day. Staff were warm and friendly throughout our stay. Great value...our new stay in Quebec.

Fantastic location in the heart of Old Quebec, just across the Place d'Armes from the Chateau Frontenac and 1 block from the Notre Dame Cathedral. Its wonderful location is enhanced by the fact that the Auberge sits on a cobblestone pedestrian street, where you can enjoy the sidewalk cafes without the city traffic. Those who haven't learned the art of packing light may not appreciate the 1 block walk from the public parking garage, but it is well worth the walk to be able to withdraw into the charm of Vieux Quebec.
