hi Sab
I'm from Québec City so never stayed much at Youth Hostels there. But now that I've left Québec for so many years, I did stay at a good Hostel there recently.
It's Auberge de la Paix, 31, rue Couillard, www.aubergedelapaix.com
T. 418-694-0735. Cdn$20, sheets $3
We were two, it was a quiet time (April i think) and the receptionist said he'd let us be alone in that dorm if there was not too much of a demand for beds at that time. We were alone in an 8-bd dorm for 2 days.
There's a small kitchen to cook meals in, and the hostel guests were all great and friendly! It's right in Old Québec, walk to everything etc.
real cool.
Enjoy!

In case you haven't found a room at l'Auberge de la Paix, the youth hostel on Ste-Ursule is another great place to stay (http://www.cisq.org/en/index.html). Great location, rooms are nice and clean, lots of activities going on and lots cool people to meet.

If you're staying in the Old City, you'll find quite a few pubs and bars on rue St-Jean (you can check out L'Arlequin, Le Kashmir, Chez son père...), and you'll be just a short walk away from La Grande Allée which is the main bar strip in Quebec City. If you're looking for a younger crowd, you might want to take the bus to Ste-Foy and check out some of the bars around Laval campus (Le Pub, Monkey...). Have fun!
