Personally, I think that most of them are tourist traps but the one at night with lantern and ghost stories might be fun.

Quebec City is quite manageable on your own.

Hi! I've gone on several walking tours in Quebec City and have enjoyed most of them, I think it's a great way to learn about the history of the city. Parks Canada offers a good one (http://www.pc.gc.ca/lhn-nhs/qc/fortifications/activ/index_e.asp), and if you'd like to go on a more unusual one, I'd recommend booking a tour with the Compagnie des Six Associes (http://www.sixassocies.com/anglais/them_eng.htm). The "Crimes and Punishment" and "Lust and Drunkenness" ones are the best.

If you'd like to do a haunted walk, I'd recommend "Ghost Tours of Quebec" (http://www.ghosttoursofquebec.com/). It's not quite as good as the ones organized in Ottawa, but still amusing. I would not recommend going on the "Original Ghost Lantern Walking Tour", some of my friends went on that one and didn't even make it to the end of the tour because they were bored. Hope this helps, and welcome to Quebec City!

I agree with the ghost tour. I went on it last year and I found it to be quite good, saw some very interesting things and learned some of the history that you wouldn't find in the guide books. Maybe it's because I'm a scaredy cat, but I was closing my eyes at the end (in the church)! There were some children in the tour as well, though, so it must not be that bad.

Travel Tips for Quebec

Québec City is not for the faint of stairs

by jglsongs

From the Old Town to the Upper Town, from the Frontenac to the riverfront to the Plains of Abraham- Québec City is a city of stairs and hills and more stairs and steep stairs and stone stairs.

The views are exquisite, the atmosphere and (usually) crisp, clean air adds to the feeling of being there - but always be aware that in this city, to get from point A to point B, it usually will involve stairs.

Romantic Quebec

by Canadienne

Staying within the confines of Canada, Quebec is as close to Europe as you can get. It has a distinctly romantic feel to it. . .and depending on the time of year, you won't hear much English being spoken around you.

If you are visiting with your partner, you can even take a horse & carriage ride around the town.

Life 100 Years Ago - Walking The Logs

by Mikebb

When walking through an old city you will always come across some nice brass monuments preserving the history of the district and the way of life. We found this brass monument whilst walking the old town just after 9pm and we thought how good it was and a great reminder to our generation of how life was a century ago.

It is a recent piece of art and congratulations to the city management for recording history in this manner. Located in a street very close to L'Hotel de Ville.

Quebec Beer!

by Deus_ultima

In the Québec province, we like our beer! (and drink a lot of it! Beers from Unibroue are DEFINITELY my favorite! And I'm not the only one.. Blanche de Chambly won the title of the BEST WHITE BEER IN THE WORLD at different beer tasting championships and was given GOLD medals 3 STRAIGHT YEARS by the Beverage Testing Institute of Chicago (Belgiums famous Blanche de Bruges finished 4th...). Maudite ALSO won 3 GOLD medals consecutively in it's category given by the Beverage Testing Institute de Chicago. And the Fin du monde (means The end of the world, 9% alcool beer, see picture) won 4 CONSECUTIVE PLATINUM medals which is considered the highest distinction a beer can obtain in it's category. Learn more about these beers and other quality beers made by Unibroue at: http://www.unibroue.com Cheers!

Carnaval de Quebec # 2 - Effigy for access!

by jamiesno

To get access to all of the Carnval sites you need to purchase a pass they call the thing you get an Effigy.

In 2005 during my visit it was $7 CDN.

Here is a picture of the one I had. Just tie it on to your coat and security will let you alone for the rest of your trip in and out of Carnaval events :-)
