Montreal Dorval Airport to Quebec City

by richard48

Im landing at 19.15 and wondered the best way to get to Quebec City.
We were thinking of hiring a car because of the timing and we have to be back to catch flight to London 3 days later.
Any suggestions on trains/buses as an alternative would be appreciated.

To get to Montreal you can use a shuttle bus or a combo of train and bus.

Unfortunately you arrive too late for the last train from Montreal to Quebec (via rail website) so you will need to stay overnight or rent a car. Personally I would rent a car if I only had three days. It will probably be close to the cost of two return train tickets. Are you OK driving right? Depending on the season it could be dark at 19:15 and you may find the driving a bit tough if you are used to driving in GB.

Just came across this link it may help.

This page shows a bus leaving the airport at 20:30 arriving in Quebec at 1:45, Price return is about $110. CAD. Good alternative if you don't want to drive.

Indeed, you best bet would be the catch the bus that will take you directly to Quebec City. It will make a couple of stops on the way (Montreal Central Station, Sainte-Foy (suburb of Québec) and then Québec downtown). You still have two options, one bus at 20h30 and one at 21h15. YOu can use the same bus to go back to the airport three days later. Unless you plan on driving around, Quebec City is best explored by foot and you don't really need a car. Just notify your hote of your late arrival.

Enjoy Québec City.

Thanks to all.
Think we will drive and stop to sleep on the way.
Considering Trois Rivieries as it looks to be on the way.
Does anyone have any other suggestions?

I'd drive straight to Quebec City. From Dorval airport you're better off on Hy 20 (instead of Hy 40) so you won't be driving through 3-Rivières. Remember, this is North America and distances are covered much more faster. There will be no traffic at the time you arrive and once on 20, it is a smooth 2-hour drive with no much in between Montreal and Quebec.

If you need suggestions for hotels and restaurants once in Quebec, let me know.

Thanks guys. We ended up hiring a car and driving up to QC. Spent 3 nights in Auberge Vincent which I would thoroughly recommend. Saw the Cirque D Soleil under the flyover which was very entertaining. Good food and a lovely atmosphere during the summer festival topped off a great trip.

The cliffs – military background #2

by tiabunna

As I noted in my introduction page, my earliest perceptions of Québec were formed by a painting of General Wolfe and his men climbing the cliffs along the St Lawrence in order to attack the French garrison. Seeing those cliffs was not just a ‘to do’, for me it came in the category of ‘must see’.

Somehow the scene from the top, as shown in the photo, doesn’t look quite the way it did in the painting of that night of 12 September 1759. Although in the painting (or my memories of it) the cliffs seemed steeper and higher, doubtless they are much the same as then. They probably were as heavily vegetated at that time, which would have helped hide the climbing soldiers should anyone have looked. But Wolfe would surely have had a hard time negotiating all the industrial developments now sprinkled along the foreshores!

Still, without doubt, the French commander the Marquis Louis-Joseph de Montcalm thought the cliffs provided reasonable protection from the rear and they were not highly defended: in any case, the English were not supposed to be able to get upriver into a position where a landing near the cliffs would be possible! As I mentioned in my previous tip, Wolfe and his men had indeed passed upstream, leading the French to send part of their forces by land even further upstream in the hope of making an interception – instead, Wolfe returned downstream to land near Québec.

Visit the Old Church

by Simonneeddy

Visit the Old Church on THE PLACE ROYAL IN OLD QUEBEC We were there for a Summer Festival where most of the people were dressed in period costumes of the early 1800's.There was also a group who came by horse back from a couple of hundred niles away also dressed in period uniforms etc. The board walk was full of people and there were all types of entertainers, jugglers, acrobats, clowns and musicians. a great festival all over the down town area.

French Food and Drink # 14 - Wild Meat Pie

by jamiesno

Here in this picture I was having Lac Saint Jean Wild Meat Pie from aux Anciens Canadiens Restaurant.

Different wild meats such as Caribou are popular and cooked very very well.

The vegetables on this plate where half warm and half cold which was nice.

I am telling you to trust me that your taste buds will be happy in Quebec!!

Semi-Pro Hockey!

by Deus_ultima

Le Caron et Guay de Pont-Rouge!
If semi-prohockey is our thing, Quebec can also give you a good serving with the Caron et Guay.

Even though less 'rough' a team compared to Verdun or Laval, these guys always deliver a good scoring and very intense game.

ALSO 9$ canadian is a VERY cheap price for the quality of the game!
