Quebec to Boston Travel

by mouthfromthesouth

Hi, do you have any good route suggestions from Quebec to Boston by train. I presume there will be a required changeover as not aware there is a direct link between the 2 cities. It would be ideal if you know where to obtain a timetable schedule.

Thanks

Well, the problem is crossing the border - even though Rail Canada and Amtrak seem to have trains across the border from each other in the Northeast, they don't connect except from eastern New York State to Montreal, and farther west (Niagara Falls and other places farther west that are of no use to you).

Note that if you are traveling only by train, that I don't think you can make this trip in one day - you will have to spend the night somewhere...

So, one routing that works (sort of) is:
1. Quebec to Montreal - 4 trains a day at www.viarail.ca - NOTE: only the earliest train could possible connect to the next train listed here at #2, and it leaves you only a 16 minute connection time in Montreal.
2. Montreal to Albany-Rensselaer (New York State) - one train a day at www.amtrak.com
3. Albany-Rensselaer to Boston South Station (one train a day at www.amtrak.com)

Now, you may discover that the connections don't work well - with only one train a day, you arrive in Albany long after the Boston train has left. So you either spend the night here, or go down to New York and spend the night. Why go to New York? Because there are more trains that go from New York to Boston, even though this is more out of your way...and you may find New York more interesting anyway...

What you can do is take very early Bus from Montreal to St Albans, Vermont or if none early enough, the day before and stay in Hotel. In St albans you can get the "Vermonter"(57) at 08:30 to arrive at 14:40 in Springfield Massachsetts. There you take the "Lake Shore limited"(448) at 19:05 to arrive in Boston at 21:40. The Vermonter used to go all the way to Montreal, but there is a bridge that will not pass inspection in Swanton/Alburg Vermont so now one has to take a bus for the first part of that route. I am not sure of the Bus schedule, but the bus stop in St Albans is a 5 minute walk from the train. The cost is $65 one way on the train. Look at Vermont Transit bus lines and Greyhound Bus Lines for the bus. There is only a bus stop in St Albans, and it is on the Montreal to Burlington route. I live here in Alburg in summer, so I have local knowledge.

I just checked Greyhound website and they don't show St Albans anymore. I was there 3 days ago and saw the bus going thru ?????? I don't know what to tell you outside of inquiring at the Bus Station in Montreal. But, If you can get from Montreal to St Albans, there is the Amtrak train in the mornings at 08:30.

Travel Tips for Quebec

Take a horse ride

by ChuckG

In most towns, i would not recommend it, but the horse rides in Quebec city are worth it. The drivers are very knowledgeable and will make you learn a lot about the city. Having a nice night in front of the Chateau Frontenac under the stars

Charm to spare

Place Royale in Lower Town is full of quaint homes with beautiful details that you should not overlook. The slanted roofs, the rough stone walls, the flowered window boxes and the upper windows and chimneys create an atmosphere of timeless beauty.

Soliciting for restaurants

by tiabunna

With evening falling, we were fascinated to find that the restaurant-infested rue Ste-Louis became alive with young ladies outside doorways accosting passing strangers. As we neared our hotel, this comely young lady caught my eye and suggested to me that we might care to visit the establishment she represented. At about that stage we realised that all was above board, the proposition on offer involved only the temptations of the table!

For all I know this may be common practice in Canada, though I did not experience it elsewhere, but these young ladies (there seemed to be no blokes) hover in the street outside the restaurants. Can anyone enlighten me if this is more widespread, or confined to the “tourist mecca” that is old Québec? I found it quite fascinating: in any event her effort proved successful, as we returned after briefly dropping our ‘day’s tourist collections’ in our hotel alongside.

Come cheer for the Rouge et Or!

by Jefie

Universite Laval's college football team has been ranked No. 1 in the country for a few years in a row and has won two national championships in the past three years. Going to a Rouge et Or game can be quite an experience because Quebec City fans love their home team - the humongous tailgate party starts around 7:00 am with free beer and food for everyone, and the first game of the season is always a sell out, with 18,120 fans cheering madly for their team. Tickets are only $15 so if you happen to be in Quebec City in the fall, check out the team's schedule and come join the fun! Anything red!
