Searching for Room in Quebec City (Old City) from September 6-9
by tziotissa
Does anyone know of an inexpensive but quiet and nice place to stay in Levis, Quebec, across the river from Quebec City?

Why do you want to stay in Levis?
The subject of your post indicates that you want to stay in the Old City. If you're looking to visit Quebec City as a tourist, then you should absolutely stay in the Old City. You can get some shared bathroom B&Bs for about CA$70, even in the summer.
I stayed here last year for a few days. I think I paid CA$65 per night: http://www.bbsaintlouis.com/index_en.htm

I would also recommend staying at a B&B - you can check out www.bbcanada.com to see what's available.
Travel Tips for Quebec
The St Lawrence River – and military background #1
by tiabunna
I hope you will wander with me down the historical path for this and the next few tips? In the early days of European settlement in Canada, the St Lawrence River provided the sole realistic access to the interior of the country. Not surprisingly, the penny dropped that whoever controlled the river essentially controlled the region. High escarpments over a narrow point in the river provided a natural defensive point and Québec became a key fortress for the new colony of New France. It served to defeat a British invasion attempt in 1690, then new city walls were built.
Apparently the French considered the approaches up the St Lawrence to Québec impassable at a place called La Traverse to all but those with special knowledge. Time for one of my heroes from history, James Cook, to make an entrance – at that time he was one of the few practitioners of the new skill of detailed nautical surveying and cartography. Cook found and mapped a route past the natural barrier, the French gunners failed to stop the British ships from passing (seems they must have been poor shots), and General James Wolfe was able to travel upstreamwith his army. He subsequently returned, as in the next tip.
From the top of the walls, watching shipping passing up and down the river, it is easy to understand Québec’s strategic importance.

Le plus bel endroit que je connaisse au Quebec est la GASPÉSIE... Avec ses paysages à couper le souffle, ses magnifiques plages, et ces habitants si chaleureux. Il ne faut surtout pas manqué ce détour.
shopping for souvenirs in Qc City and Malls
by Scotsgal
When going to Quebec City for the first time you will probably not notice the prices of some souvenirs for e.g. a Canada key-ring I bought which was $1.15 in dollarama(our $1 shop in Place Laurier) and the one of the souvenir shops in Old Quebec...the exact same key-ring was $8.00! So, check out the dollar store for Quebec souvenirs before you leave!
French Food and Drink # 6 - Fondued Cheese
by jamiesno
Here in this picture you can see the Fondued Cheese I had from Au Petit Coin Breton.
This was very tasty, at first I thought I might have to cook it myself in a fondue but it came out already cooked.
I really enjoyed this! The cheese was very tasty, soft and warm.
Packing List
by dzni
Hmm... I was there in summer and it was very pleasant. I suppose it's warm enough in the day that you might be able to get by in shorts. However, it can get pretty cool in the evenings, so I'd be sure to bring some long pants and a light jacket. Winter, from what I've heard, is REALLY cold, so bring your heavy winter stuff.
