Travel Tips for Regina

by vtveen

What a beat of the drums !!!
What a colours !!!
Dancers completely in trance !!!

We were lucky and could visit the Powwow on the occasion of the opening of the Campus of First Nations University in Regina.

But you will find them all over the country and at least once a year in Regina (see website).

A Wild Ride!

by Bwana_Brown

As part of the RCMP graduation festivities, we were taken for a high speed ride around their driver training course, complete with screeching tires through hairpin turns! This is done in a typical 'souped-up' cruiser used for highway patrol duties, like this one, equipped with a high performance engine, special suspension and heavy duty brakes. It is quite a thrill accelerating down the straightaways and braking at the last moment to negotiate the various obstacles between you and the next straightaway.

Ahhhh the beer...

by lauriejeanne about Cathedral Village Freehouse

Cathedral Village Freehouse is in a way the upscale version of Bushwakker's. You can get quite an assortment of Bushwakker beer there (not all, but still quite a few) and the menu offers more variety overall. The ambience is nice, however, the restaurant can get terribly noisy. I was fortunate to be able to sit on the patio outside when I was there. I had an amazing seafood salad. The greens and the vinagrette were excellent!

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) Academy

by LiliCanada

There's a police academy in Regina, the main training centre for all recruits from across the country for Canada's national police force.

They have a horse show (the musical ride), changing of the guard, a museum and they'll tour you through some of the training sites. So for instance, you may see them working out, or jogging, or doing a mock bust, or car pullover. They look rather smart in their red and black uniforms and you'll see more and more female recruits.

Saskatchewan War Memorial

by vtveen

During our last visit to Regina we were by change witness of the unveiling of a new (and last) statue at the Saskatchewan War Memorial. This statue of a war nurse has now a place beside that of a First World War Canadian soldier. And both flank the names of thousands and thousand of brave Canadian men and women who lost their lives during combat.

For us (‘Dutchies’) it was a great honour to be witness of this unveiling and to meet some Canadian veterans who took part in the liberation of the Netherlands. We even spoke with Lt. Col. Hallie Sloan of the war nurses (who unveiled the statue) and some other veterans, who participated in one of the big parades of veterans in our hometown Apeldoorn.

Standing in front of this war memorial we did realise how many young men paid an ultimate price for our freedom. Thank you Canada !!
