need help

by Weelkaya

Hello there,
I live in USA and will move to canada soon. I have two choices, Saskatoon and Edmonton. I have never been there and try to compare the advantages and disavantages in each case. I have a family and I am looking for a safe place to live.

Any help would be greatly apperciated.
Thanks

I was born in Edmonton, lived there for 21 years, then went back after 6 years in the US and lived there another 17 years. It's a nice place in the summer, spring and fall, bigger than Saskatoon, closer to the mountains (but still far from there, at least 3 1/2 hours by car.) Very cold in the winter, but I believe Saskatoon is as well. The land is Saskatoon is flatter. Edmonton is built on a river valley. Prices in Edmonton for homes are now very very high, and I don't think that's happened so much in Saskatoon. I've also heard recently that there has been more crime in Edmonton, but that happens in cities everwhere I guess. Good luck. Donna

I think, as far as safety is concerned, you're really not going to have much concern moving to either city. While Saskatoon and Edmonton do have petty crime (which is typical everywhere in Canada), it's really a blip on the radar when compared to elsewhere.

Edmonton is a larger city, but not large as to be overwhelming. I really like Edmonton. Saskatoon is much smaller, and I've never been there, but I've never heard anything bad about it. It's known to be a college town of sorts, but far away from elsewhere. Both cities are known for their arts scenes. And Edmonton, as previously explained, is only a 3 hour drive away from the Rockies, or a 7 hour drive to BC's Okanagan Valley (hot, arid lake country full of wineries!).

edmonton is a lot of fun in the summer months. we have festivals going almost non-stop.
the crime in edmonton has gone up a lot lately. most of it is occuring in bars.
this winter has been brutal already this year but that is unusual for november. last winter was fabulous. very few weeks of really cold weather. saskatchewan will be not better weather wise.
personally, i'd choose edmonton as there is a little more to do within a 8 hour radious.

If employment is not an issue, the price of an average house in Edmonton is $265,000, and the price of that same house in Saskatoon is $165,000 (source Remax).

Travel Tips for Saskatoon

small town flare

by Merrell

Although this isn't about Saskatoon, it is worth taking some time to check out some of the thousands of small towns that speckle Saskatchewan. This town was special because we share the name. I took this photo just in time as a few short months later this wonderful granary was torn down, as most of these wonderful landmarks sadly are now.

Pike Lake Provincial Park

by AllieF

This provincial park is southwest of Saskatoon on Highway 60 and is good for almost any recreational activity you can think of. Swimming, hiking, boating, camping, and baseball are just a few of the many things to do at this park. Stores and facilities are available. There are trails for those who want to hike, beaches on the lake
