 | Whitehorse Reviews | Tips 1 - 10 of 10 | | "Oh this place is cute, we should stay here!" "Lets see what else is in town" (a couple seconds later...) "Those are all nice, but The Stratford Motel has an outdoor entrance, so we should stay there." "Okay, sounds good. It's easy to walk to the restaurants from there anyway." ---a couple minutes go by as Bobby checks in...we get out key, park the car and open the door--- "What is this place???" Too many flowers...(see picture 2) "Where are the pillows?" "They are on the bed, Bobby. Can't you see them?" "No, I thought they were just pillowcases" "Hey, look at the bathroom...isn't it neat how the ceiling is peeling like that?" "Oh, we get a little refrigerator and cooking range, too...that's cool" --opening up the microfridge-- "Hmmm...it seems it's just a wall of ice." And laughing ensues.
On a more helpful and serious note--this motel is quiet and the shower is very powerful. They do put coffee and a coffee pot in the room. The beds are...there. That's good, right? There are extra pillows, but they don't really help increase support for your head. In the summer, you do get air conditioning but it was quite cold in our room in September. I don't believe we'll be staying here again. The price was decent, though...$83 CAD with a return of $10 when you bring back the key. The drive from Carcross to Skagway is very scenic. If I find my pictures I'll scan them. In the gold rush days men would take ships to Skagway and then climb over the Chilkoot Pass. At Carcross they would build rafts in order to cross Lake Bennett and travel on up to Whitehorse. I spent a night at the Caribou Hotel (the building on the right in the picture). Carcross used to be called Caribou Crossing. I told an old Indian in the tavern I was staying in the corner room on the top floor and he said it was haunted by Skookum Jim's ghost. The Bonanza Inn has clean rooms with bathroom for only 59 canadian dollar per night (2005 prices). It is located on the corner of Main and 4th, in walking distance of all the things you can do in Whitehorse. In your room you will find a coffeemaker with coffee. Ofcourse there is television with many channels in the room. The only downpoint was the heat in our room (and in others as well). It was summer, but it was too hot to sleep well. Leave a Comment

While I haven't actually stayed here myself, I worked here one summer (I needed to make extra money to go to Europe) as a chambermaid. I can say firsthand that while this hotel seems nice enough, basic sanitary cleaning practices are NOT always followed. While I was working there, my supervisor gave me instructions to not change the sheets after a guest had left, but just make the beds look nice ("so that nobody could tell the difference") whenever we were in a rush. This hotel was so understaffed that often, we did not have enough time to vaccuum rooms, even if they had previously had pets staying in them. The general theme seemed to be "don't waste time, nobody can tell the difference", because we were on more than one occasion required to work overtime and then not paid for it. Also, here is forewarning... staff are not allowed to keep the tips you give them, and the money is required be given to the head of the area in which they work (housekeeping, bar, etc.) The owner himself seems to be blissfully unaware of all this.
Good: Has laundry facilities, restaurant and a hair salon inside the hotel itself. The restaurant/bar's not bed either. Bad: SANITATION, staff members lacking in basic courtesy, extremely understaffed Theme: HotelPrice: US$80-120 » Currency ConverterComparison: about averageAddress: 411 Main St, Whitehorse, YT Y1A2B6Phone: 1-867-668-4500Directions: Main Street, located in downtown coreWebsite: www.goldrushinn.com Other Contact: fax: 1-867-668-7432

I am very disappointed in the Grey Fox Karaoke at the Songbird Lounge. The host, Gary Lachance is arrogant and does not treat the guests with respect. One day I put up songs to sing, but he must not have liked my singing because I only got to sing the one song the whole night. It was that way with my friends too. But I noticed that a couple of people sang many songs, sometimes several in a row. I also got a chance to go to the other Karaoke at the Discovery Bar and found it to be far more superior. At least I got to sing my share of songs as did everyone else. The hotel is a great place to stay. The staff is caring and accomodating, however, I do not recommend going to the Songbird Lounge to sing as you will probably be disappointed and you will most likely leave feeling abused, unimportant, and totally disatisfied.
Great food! Theme: HotelPrice: US$40-80 » Currency ConverterComparison: about averageAddress: 4220 4th Ave, Whitehorse, YT Y1A1K1
