Dining in MC
by CTthePAS2
HI! My fiance, son and I are visiting MC this week for 5 days and hope to get some good advice on restaurants ...we love authentic and look forward to being blown away! We hope to not get trapped into a typically tourist spot like La Parrilla in Cancun for instance (totally touristic and uninspiring) We live in DC and leave to eat good food in Philly and NYC...(food here also quite hum drum) If that gives you an idea how important good food is to us. We are staying Paseo de la Reforma,; Colonia Cuauhtemoc if this helps...A thousand thank yous!

I have several restaurants listed in my MC page.... but I don't know what kind of food you're looking for. A small taco place can be the most authentic thing you will find, but maybe that's not your thing. If you want it fancier there's a place called VILLA MARIA which I love (it's the first one on my page) but yes it can be a bit tourist-oriented too. However they have wonderful food and a nice environment. It's not too close to where you're staying though, but in the Polanco area instead (close to the Anthropology museum). There's another great place close to this area called LOS PANCHOS but it's way less fancy, more of a modest and local-customers kind of place. There are also lots of taco places called EL FAROLITO, EL TIZONCITO, EL FOGONCITO, which are nice and have good food at reasonable prices. Unfortunately the best 2 mexican food places I knew close to where you'll be staying have been shut down.... so you won't find a lot in that area, you'll have to search farther away.

Thank you! Any tips are better than consierge recommendations or going it alone! I love authentic "mom and pops" places...fantastic food quality and great service can be found in the most unassuming and surprising atmospheres!
We look forward to taco tasting every day there! I will definitely try your recommendations! Also do they have menudo and mole in MC? or are these regional dishes? Does MC specialize in any other dishes, drinks, etc? Thank you again!

Travel Tips for Mexico City
cabs, metro, dentist
by griptongue
Central district is a very interesting and beautiful part of the city. The churches, ruins, buildings and people were all great. It was very easy to get around the entire city. I spent 6 days walking, eating great cheap food, taking tours in the city. Went to visit a friend there. Found a great dentist and had major work done for about %10 of what it would cost here. Saved $10000
Go atop Torre Latinoamericana...
by ephobius
Go atop Torre Latinoamericana (Latin American Tower), a 44 story office tower, once the tallest in Latin America (now surpassed by 2 other buildings in Mexico City). View points at 42nd, 43rd and 44th floors. Restaurant at 41st floor. Acuarium at 38th floor!! Fare to the top: about 4 dollars. See live webcams from La Latino (short nickname). Go to the following address and click on any picture. You will be asked to accept a little software for viewing. Downloads in no time and opens another window. Enjoy the great views!!: http://www.centrohistorico.com.mx/cgi-bin/bvdesa/BVPortal/ch11_camaras.jsp
Hugging
by cinthya_in_victoria
When living in Canada and traveling in Japan and China, I realize that in some cultures aren't used of the 'art' of hugging. For all those who haven't been in my country before, it's customary for us Mexicans geeting a friend with a hug; if somebody gives you a hug, proves that he/she is happy to see you. Let me tell you a brief story:
At the turn of the XX century, during the Mexican Revolution, it was customary to discretly search people when meeting them, just to make sure that they were not carrying any guns that could create problems, and that was done by giving them a hug, then, as time passed by, people stopped carrying guns, but the practice stayed on and now instead of searching for guns, we try to show our affection to our friends.
Things for Packing
by Aptypo
Items that enable you to bring along the other items as effortlessly as possible. A very important list. Are you ready?
CLOTHING
This list describes clothes most of us are quite likely to bring with us. Comfortable clothing, think layers so that you can take off and add clothes as the weather changes throughout the day. Outerwear as necessary, a lightweight rain jacket for late spring, summer and early fall; a heavier jacket for other months. An outfit for a special evening at a nice restaurant or the theater. If you're spending more than a day in Mexico City, check out the entire list for other necessary items.
Little church behind Bellas Artes
by Laura_Mexico
This is a church that you may not walk into by mere chance as it is not very big or very famous, and there are so many churches to see in this area including the Cathedral..... but I got to know it because a dear friend of mine got married there and I thought it was pretty nice, so it makes for a nice off-the-beaten-path tip.
The San Juan de Dios church is right next to the Franz Mayer museum (highly recommendable too), behind Bellas Artes Palace and therefore across the street from the Alameda Central too. It's not too big but it is nicely decorated and the patio surrounded by this church and the one next door as well as the museum is cute too. If you're walking by this area you may want to spend 5 minutes inside just to check it out, it's a nice place.
