  • Have stayed there quite some time during my 2003/2004 trip to Mexico, now (Oct 2005) got back and it was as pleasant as before. The staff is absolutely friendly and always up with great tips and help.
Rooms are well-maintained, though those fencing the restaurant/lounge area can be a bit noisy till the restaurant closes.

They have a gigantic breakfast in the mornings, which contains amongst all the common stuff a lot of fresh fruit.
Also they offer delicious pasta (arrabiata & putanesca) and great tortillas and some more stuff in their restaurant.
There is an in-door travel agency and internet café.

  • Last night I was walking around the Zocalo, and I saw this famouse Hostel in the city. So I decided to get in and have a couple of beers. When you are traveling as a backpacker you look for cheep and nice acomodations and the with the best locations. This hostel provides the best location in the city, clean acommdation and during all year long you will be able to spend time with people of many different nationalities.

The plus that this hostels has is the cheerful restaurant/cafe/bar that has downstars, so when you get in, don't think you are not invited to the party.

The exclente location in the heart of the city.

The first time I was in Mexico City I came here many times to eat and drink. They have a very nice café in the first floor where you can meet people from around the world. The next time I came to the city I decided to stay here, but it was only for a night. We were lucky to get a whole dormroom all alone, but shared the bath with another dormroom. I waited more than an hour the next morning to come in to the bath because it was always occupied there. Except for this it was a very nice place to stay.

It's located very central, right behind the cathedral in the zocalo. You are in walkingdistance from many of the things in Centro Historico, and close to the metro.

The staff are helpfull and the rooms are clean. They have a roofterrace with a bar, in addition to the café and a shop selling travel gear in the first floor. There's also a kitchen, laundry, internet, luggagestoring, and other things.

Breakfast is included and is served in the first floor café. But because I had to wait so long to use the bath I almost came to late for the breakfast, and there was not so much left. I've heard that the breakfast is very good there, I just suppose you have to get there early.

It's part of Hostelling International, so you get a discount if you are a member. The price is from 13 USD and up.

  • If you're looking for cheap accommodation, this can be another option. This hostel belongs to the Youth Hostelling International association, so you will certainly find it in any hostel guide. I don't have the prices for this one but I suppose it's very similar to the hostel Moneda, in the previous tip. They have a small bar in the lobby, internet access, a youth travel agency (Mundo Joven) and it's located in a very nice place, right in the heart of town.

Hostel Cathedral: Mexico City's best budget accommodation    Check Rates

  • Both my friend and I would wholeheartedly endorse this hostel. We stayed at other hostels in Mexico and none of them was a patch on this place. It is clean, well organised, secure and staffed by very helpful, friendly and knowledgeable young Mexicans. (hello to George and Alberto from Julia and Rachel!). The rooms each have own shower and separate toilet with hand basins also within the rooms. The rooftop terrace bar is also a great place to have a Corona and look out over the popular Zocalo or simply gaze into the distance and be mesmerised by the huge vastness of a twinkling Mexico City at night.

The hostel offers organised tours round the city and to the pyramids. Both are accompanied by highly knowledgeable guides who explain both in English and Spanish.

We also got 4 nights for the price of 3, a nice welcoming touch.

Hostel Cathedral: A meeting place for foreign and local travellers    Check Rates

  • Hostel Catedral is located at 4, Guatemala on the very left facing the Cathedral. It's quite a good place for a budget traveller, though some prices are highly exxagerated, f.e. the beer costs 20 pesos, a triple of what you get at a local store (6,50 pesos only). The staff is quite nice but money-oriented: unwilling to honour your ISIC card that entitles you to discounts, trying to persuade you to take a 200 pesos taxi to the airport ( I was smart enough to travel on the metro - only 2 pesos one way). It can get quite noisy in the evening which prevents you from sleeping. However, I liked the mixture of people there, a nice bar area to hang out with international and local music. You can also enjoy the terrace on the 6th floor from where you see the panorama of the city.

  • As far as some hostels go, this one is tops! It is centrally located so getting around is easy..whether you need a taxi, bus or the metro. There is a tourist agency inside who I didn't actually use to book a tour, but one of the agents was kind enough to help me when I was having problems with a plane ticket.
There is food, drink, private showers, an internet cafe...(actually, you never have to leave;P), and a friendly staff.
I was downstairs doodling and having a beer when I met my new Mexican artist friends:) ..so locals like this place too.

It was a bit chilly so I never sat on the terrace with it's views of the city.

Hostel Cathedral: A central hostal    Check Rates
I never stayed at the hostal (the advantage of having friends in the city), just used the internet cafe. But the location can't be beat. It is located directly behind the Zocalo on a side street. The hostal features a internet cafe, restaurant, help desk (English speaking) and many many rooms.

It is part of the hostel Internaional group. A discount applies for members.

  • ok here's the thing, if you like to party then this could be your kind of place. but i could NOT SLEEP in this hostel. they have music blasting and drunk people yelling at 4am in the morning. it was more expensive than hostel moneda and hostel amigo, and horrible for the money (135 p). the staff are lame, you have to pay 10 pesos for 30minutes of internet. they dont include towels, you have to make a 50p deposit. the only good thing is that the facilities are nice. bathrooms, sink, showers, room cleanliness, lockers. other than that, i hated this place. they have special nights where there's live performances which is cool, but there were ppl smoking weed here. and they sell condoms at the hostel, which is a first hahaha... breakfast is nasty, although the kitchen staff are very sweet and nice.

nice rooftop bar with a great view of the streets and the cathedral

  • This is one of the better hostels that I have stayed at. It is clean and nicely decorated. Furthermore, the location of this hostel is most ideal. It is located right behind the Catedral and is one of the favorite hangout for the locals who wants to strike up a conversation with the foreigners. It costs about 120 pesos a night. The subway station is located within walking distance. Really convienient to get around.

Clean. Internet available. Great tour information. Nice location.
