My room was always well clean, the people always frienly and the breakfast great and diferent everyday, about 9diferents mexicaner hot things, sweet breads of diferent kinds,Orange and pomelo fresh juice,... Great
i did used to give a tip to The meseros and to The cleaner everyday...
610 per night single and 820 double

Mid-range hotels in Mexico city - what area to choose?

by rochana

I will be in Mexico city with my husband for about 8-9 days in latter May, and have a lot of questions!

1) We would like a reasonable hotel (500-600 pesos is fine) which isn't right in the Centro Historico or too touristy an area, but convenient to the Metro. I am not that interested in bars or shopping; would like something that is close to restaurants and cafes, though.

I was looking at two hotels in the Zona Rosa/ Roma area - the hotel del Principado on Londres, and hotel Milan on Alvaro Obregon. Any feedback on these will be most welcome, thanks!

2) We will be going to Oaxaca for 3 days, and to El Tajin. Is it possible to rent a car and make it a triangular trip from Mexico City - Oaxaca - Tajin - back to MC? How much can I expect to pay for a 6-day car rental? Or is this not a convenient way to do this trip?

3) Any reasonable hotel recommendations in Oaxaca will be great.

Thanks!

I always root for the Gillow, but its in the centro. Pedmars suggestion seems good.

In Oaxaca I stopped one night at the hostel Paulina with the idea of looking for a moderately priced hotel and never left. The property is sqeaky clean, the free breakfast substancial and the location is convenient. A negative however- lots of street noise from the dorm rooms- the privates im sure were quieter, but unavailable when I was there.

Have you cosidered using the excellent and convenient bus system to move between Mexico, Oaxaca and Veracruz? Just an idea

Thank you - Osoeno and Pedmar.

I also thought of the Gillow, but wanted something away from the Centro Historico. I got a good deal with del Principado, however, so I went with it.

And yes, I have considered the bus system, and will rely on it if the car thing isn't viable! What is the difference between 1st class and 2nd class? Too bad the train line between MC and Oaxaca is not running right now.

2nd class busses will make many more stops, almost like a city bus. In general 1st class busses are more comfortable and make less stops, If you enjoy watching the ebb and flow of everyday life and are not in a hurry the savings on second class runs can be significant. The legs between Mexico and Oaxaca and Oaxaca and Veracruz and Veracruz and Mexico look like there only 7 or 8 hours each.

This looks like a really cool itinerary that I might try in the future.

A word on your timing- be prepared for hot weather.
