Hotel Catedral: Reasonable Hotel in the city center of Cd. del Car
If you try to find information about hotels in Cd. del Carmen you quite often either find recomendations for Playa del Carmen (totally wrong!) or the only recomended hotel is either Hotel la Fiesta or the Holiday In. Both Hotels are near the airport and in a more commercial zone and NOT in the city center.
We went to La Fiesta, it was full so they sent us to Hotel Catedral, which was right in the center of the city. The Hotel was even a bit cheaper than La Fiesta ($48 per double w. A/C)
The hotel is clean, the rooms are spacious, beds are OK and the staff is friendly. They even have a small restaurant at their premises which serves breakfast. This is not anything to recomend but since there are only very few alternatives it's worth a try.

Hotel LossAndes: Great Hotel, that only get better w/ time.
I have stayed on several hotels on the island, and yes some are more luxurious, some are cheaper, this place offers the best balance of cost and confort, and luxury. The rooms are spacious and clean, the staff is friendly and helpfull, there is a restaurant and a bar where again the staff are very accomodating. I recomend this place to anyone.
116 Habitaciones equipadas con aire acondicionado, Teléfono, TV por cable y todo lo necesario para su descanso... Muchas son las vías de acceso para llegar al Hotel LOSSANDES, resulta sencillo dada su privilegiada ubicación.

Continental Plaza: Close to the sea in Playa
We saw this hotel when we walked to the boulevard. I looks very nice from the outside, and the pictures on the website are even better.
I think its that you are very close to everything!

Stayed at Reef Club Playacar -...
Stayed at Reef Club Playacar - 4 star all-inclusive that I'd rate 3.5. The administrative service had an attitude, the blue-collar, front-line service could not have been nicer. Nice place, lots of energy, food OK, kinda bland. Rooms very nice, clean, spacious. There are two rows of 3, 4 story buildings that enclose a jungle-ish garden. Ask for a room at the front buildings if you don't like the dark jungle atmosphere, which we found rather dank, moist, heavy. The second week we moved up and were much happier about location. The beach is beautiful, scuba available right in front at beach hut. Drinks very good, pizza, chicken, burgs, dogs, fries at the beach palapa. Italian reservation restaurant on the 2nd floor is good - not very flavourable, but definitely not bad by any means. Lower buffet restaurant is always clean, food very palatable - North American tourist orientation. Pool cold - but ocean warm & lovely. Just a 10 minute walk through a beautiful residential section to village Playa del Carmen - with funky restaurants, bars, silver jewellry stores, silver jewellry stores, tiendas de joyas de plata and the ferry to Cozumel.
