We stayed here in July 1997. It is a 19th Century hacienda, two floors surrounding a courtyard, and all rooms have an entrance onto the balcony or courtyard. The rooms are large with wooden beam ceilings. Our room had a pottey fireplace, a deerskin rug on the floor, and a large en suite bathroom. DO NOT DRINK THE WATER -- OR EVEN RINSE YOUR TOOTHBRUSH! Breakfast and Dinner are available at extra cost, but are well worth it. The cooking is not like that of Northern Mexico with hot chillies -- it is more Mediterranean in flavors. Dinner is served family-style with all guests around a huge table.
The Lacandon Maya are special guests. They are Stone Age indians who were never conquored by the Spanish -- they fled into the jungle (La Selva Lacandon). The foundation that runs Na Balom supplies them with a room, meals and medical care if they come into town. They have "pageboy" haircuts and wear the traditional white shift.
The food is excellent. The town is not that large (a 45 minute walk diagonally), but fascinating. 16th Century Spanish Colonial architecture, markets, too many street hawkers. Many small stores and restaurants. Tours into the countryside are available.
The altitude is high enough that mosquitos are not a problem and the temperatures are moderate. To get here, fly to the provincial capital, Tuxtla Guttierrez, and take a taxi the 85 km to San Critobal de Las Casas.
Warning: The man running the desk collected money in advance for the return taxi trip -- and was quite put out when I reminded him of that. He obviously expected to keep the money.
Directions: Edge of town.
