Maya Ruins of Tonina

by nepalgoods

On the way from San Cristobal to Palenque many people pass through the city of Ocosingo. They don't know, that near Ocosingo are the ruins of Tonina. Those ruins are not as spectacular as Palenque, but they are worth a visit!

Food market

by Enzyme_X

People from surrounding villages come here evreyday to sell their products. Walk between the stands, fight your way through the crowd and maybe you'll finds something to buy. You'll feel like one of them.

Most beautiful mexican town I've seen

by Srechko

"Chilly but beautiful"

I spent 4 days in San Cristobal during my 2 month long Mexico & Central America trip.

This town is amazingly beautiful, it is located high in the mountains at 2100m a.s.l. and here I experienced severe Mexican winter. Entire town is built by spanish colonial system, houses are colorful and small, and streets are very clean.

"Maya town"

Nights and mornings were very cold (close to 0C) but days were sunny and warm. There are several pretty plazas in the town and they are great for people watching. Mayas from surrounding villages come to town to sell their goodies.

Town is also a great starting point to do several interesting tours / explorations. While I was there, I went to Sumidero Canyon and Tuxtla Gutierrez zoo (independently) and did Maya villages, and Palenque tour. Yes - it was busy 4 days in San Cristobal.

The ruins of ancient Tonina are about 14 km from Ocosingo. You have to take a taxi to go there. Then you'll find a nice hilly landscape and the ruins on terraces cut from a hillside.
The site dates from 500 to 800.

The most typical sight of Tonia is this stair, which is quite different from those in Palenque or other Maya cities.
Beneath this stair is an extensive labyrinth. It is not sure, for which purpose is was built.

There is no jungle around Tonina, but a wide open grassy landscape, where you find unexcavated mounts, old statues, temples beside many colourful birds and the occasional snake.
