A good place to network
The moment we got off the train we were swarmed by touts from several competing hotels. We'd already heard about Casa Margarita so when we found out the room cost 250 pesos we followed the young men to their van and were driven a short distance to the hostel. Actually the hostel was so near the train station we could have just walked.
Unique Quality: The room came with free breakfast and dinner. Breakfast was fine.....coffee, oatmeal, eggs and pancake. Dinner was another matter. We dined there on the first and third evenings and both times we had vegetarian meals.......how would you like vegetarian taco with potato and pasta :( Apparently they did serve meat on the day we weren't around. I think they do a meatless dinner rotation every other day.
They also offered day tours at competitive prices but the minimum number of people required to book the tour is 2 or 4, depending on the tour.
Best Budget Place to Stay
Maragarita's was an amazing place to stay as budget travelers. The people who run it are so kind, friendly and hospitable. They helped plan excursions and things to do. They fed us almost every meal - all breakfasts and dinners at least and their place is the mecca of backpackers from all over the world travelling in this area.
When we first arrived, a private room was not available but since we were not feeling so well that day (Monteczuma's Revenge) we were given a bed to rest on in the dorm room until an hour later we were moved into a small, clean room with a window.
While the place is by no means luxurious and would certainly be considered rustic, it was such a fun place to stay. We made friends with travelers from all over: Europe, Asia, Australia, etc. and were so well taken care of by the warm people who worked there. It was very cold while we were there but the kitchen/dining area was a warm, jolly place to be at any time of day or night.
From looking online it appears that the place has since expanded quite a bit and since it has been so long since I was there, it could very well be quite different but my experience was wonderful there.
Unique Quality: They feed you tasty, authentic meals. They gave us a special hot punch with rum or tequila on Christmas Eve and New Years Eve.
Best place to start
It was raining when we decended from the Chepe train. Many people were hawking hotel rooms-cheap! We found the Casa margarita van for the short, dry ride to the inn. This is not a fancy place but found the room fine for our first night in Creel. The room came with dinner (simple fare) and breakfast (again, simple but fast and hot) 3 of us for 400 mx. ($35 usd)
The front desk arranges tours very reasonable (and much cheaper than those offered elsewhere) 150mx vrs 200mx each.
Mostely back packers and seasoned travelers stay here. Plenty to talk about at the dinner tables and ideas to share.
Unique Quality: We spoke with an American man who was returning from his twice a year trip to the USA. He had married a Tarahumara indian (not an easy thing to do as he explained) He was on his way back to his home he just finished building in the mountains. He had a 5 hour hike into it from the last paved road.
Directions: Across from town plaza about 3 blocks from train depot.
