renting a car

by farmwife45

We are traveling to San Miguel in January. We want to visit with friends in Comonfort and will need a vehicle for 3 or 4 days. Would it be best to use one of the shuttle services from Leon airport and rent a vehicle once we get to San Miguel?

The shuttle service I use, which is very good, is NB: I don't know why, but sometimes when I try their website, in fact, it is happening right now, it doesn't come up (says link is broken or whatever) but if I try again later, I have gotten them. OR you could just write to their email first, if the website is giving trouble: and they have always written back to me quite quickly

If you are going to be in SMA for a number of days other than when you need the car, it might be best just to rent fr there, as it is difficult to park in the city, and I don't know the costs.

Thank you. We have rented a house and will have a place to park at night. Since we are not familiar with the roads I figured it would be best to wait until we get there to rent. I found one car rental agency in SMA. I believe it is San Miguel Rentals.

The busses between SMA and Comonfort are frequent . The taxis are inexpensive. Parking in SMA can be problematic. You could easily get by on public transportation and maybe rent a car one day for a trip around the countryside pending the advice of your friends.

I would recommend
They have good pricing and reliable services. I have used them many times, and have recommended to others. Rent a car at San Miguel Rent a Car on Calle Codo. Owner Jose Antonio is very amenable to negotiable multiple day rates. Make sure you ask for a car with power steering. Don't assume you'll get the same quality of cars in the states.

Travel Tips for San Miguel de Allende

Venture outside the town center

by karenincalifornia

The town center has the concentration of ornate mansions built by 16th to 19th century landed gentry. However, the outlying areas also have their unique character.

We wandered all over - including into the barrios. This is the location of the original adobe huts of the indigenous people and people of mixed race while the peninsulares occupied the main part of town. Today, the area is home to the working class - the people who serve the wealthier residents and tourists of San Miguel de Allende.

The barrios are real Mexico. Real people. Authentic local markets. No tourists. Most tourists do not want to go there.

More architectural beauty

Below the arches is a restaurant you can eat and enjoy the atmosphere from the Jardin Principal. The Parroquia church is to the right of this. I don't know the name of the restaurant. But it sure is nice to look at.

San Miguel

A small and beautiful colonial town located near Guanajuato. Has a some interesting churches and a good nightlife. The town was founded in 1542 and is a good place to enjoy the mexican colonial architecture.

Special Lil' Place

"Very highly Recommended Mexican Town"

San miguel is always a wonderful experience for me.It is a town of colonial charm...the fact that it is not a big city helps make it so.the Mexican government declared the town 'A National Monument' so there is very little in the way of large buildings and modenization, giving a wonderful'step back into the 17th century feel'.If for some stupid reason you don't like to be around American tourists, there are tons/there are times when tourist season is low.The times it is the most crowded is the summer and around New Years.
