Travel to SM in June with children/house to rent?/kids camps

by jkalinsky

My sister and I would like to travel to SM June 2008 with our kids ages 11,10,9 and 5. Is there enough for kids to do in SM? Any ideas for good art and Spanish classes/camps for kids? Also, would like to rent a nice house, centrally located with pool and help?

Thanks- Jennifer

Check out the groups on yahoo about San Miguel de Allende. There is one called the civil list. This would be a great place to find SMA information and to ask questions. Both about child activities and rentals.

There is a camp - Here is the website - we also have a large house with pool - 4 bedrooms/4 bathrooms and 3 day a week housekeeper - usually rents for around $2200/month - let me know if you are intereseted.

Dear Jennifer: Did you ever find a place to stay with a pool when you went to SMA last June? We are trying to find a long-term rental with pool but it's harder than it looks! I saw you received a reply from someone who had a 4-BR place and wondered if you followed up. My husband, kids and I are going to two years in June, though don't expect to find something for that long at first. Hope you all had a great experience during your summer stay. Appreciate any leads you may have gathered regarding housing. Thanks so much and Happy New Year! Ann Hillers (P.S. I use annhillers@mac.com as my main address if it wouldn't be a problem to respond to that instead of this VT site.)

Travel Tips for San Miguel de Allende

A nice church very close to downtown

by Laura_Mexico

This is San Francisco Temple.... I would have loved to see the inside of the church but unfortunately there was a funeral taking place in front of the main door when we passed by (before leaving town) and we could not go in. The architecture of the facade and the dome - not to mention the stone walls - were already quite impressive. I hope to be able to see the main altar and the general decoration on my next visit, as I'm sure they must be beautiful too because this is one of the main churches in town.

It is located on San Francisco street, very close to the main square and the cathedral (only a couple of blocks away).

Think Margaritas

by searcey about Tio Lucas

The cesear salad is made tableside and is wonderful. It is enough for 2 unless you are making it your meal. They also have great garlic soup.

I find that most soups in restaurants in Mexico are great.

The wait staff are great and have a lot of patience in helping American's trying to speak their language. They also remember you when you come back the next time. Garlic soup and margaritas - great combo!

The city gets a new name

by karenincalifornia

In honor of Ignacio Allende, on March 8, 1826, the state congress proclaimed San Miguel a city and changed the name to San Miguel de Allende.

So if you are wondering why this city has such a long name, it is because it is named after two people - the patron saint, San Miguel and Ignacio Allende, who led the town to independence from the Spanish Crown.

Stroll through the town and soak in its 17th - 19th century ambience. The town center has not changed much since independence was achieved.

"Makes you feel like home"

"Street scene"

San Miguel de Allende, it's located in the heart of the country, in the state of Guanajuato, aprox. 3 hours by car from Mexico city. This place is a lovely little town, where its architecture it totally european and people with lot of Mexican history.

This place has turned in one of the favourite destinations for foreign retired people, so normally it tends to be very quite during the week, but at weekends and holiday (specially in summer) the towns is a party in the strees. As it's one of the favorite destiantions in Mexico it's easy to hang out with others and meet new people all over the way (the town is small).

I recomend you discover for your own this place, I'm sure you will love it - I use to visit it every time I can or in the spring breaks. Let me know what do you think.

Just check my hotel list - there are good options.

Pacefull Town of San Miguel

"The Gothic Cathedral"

The most agreeable to see in the city is the temple of San Francisco, from the 18th. Century, with it´s beautiful churrigueresque façade, and the famous church is almost a symbol of San Miguel de Allende, even though it's construction in neogothical style is more recent, was built atop the structure of the ancient temple of the 17th. Century, keeping entirely it's interior and the original plant.
