Acapulco to Guadalupe
by susannon
I am arriving by cruise ship into Acapulco and want to go to Our Lady of Guadalupe outside Mexico City. I have about 8 hours. Can it be done?
Thank you,
Susannon

I would not dare it - but probably it can be done if you are prepared to a stressful adventure and taking the airplane. So from the cruise ship to the airport, a flight to Mexico City takes about 50 to 60 min, from MEX airport you take the subway and then walk a bit to the basilica, and then the whole way back.
If you are lucky to get flights at the right time it can be well done.
With land transportation it is impossible. The distance Acapulco - Mexico City is about 300 km, so one way would take you 3 to 4 hours by car. The bus trip (one way) takes 5 hours.

I work on cruise ships and have heard of too many people being left behind at ports. If you choose to make your own tour and are late, you're out of luck, the ship won't wait! BUT, if you take a purchased ship tour, they are the ones responsible, so no chance of missing the boat!
That distance looks a little too far! I wouldn't risk it.
Enjoy your cruise and vacation!

Thank you for your very helpful answers, and I think you are right - I won't risk it! Apparently there is an underwater statue of Our Lady of Guadalupe in the Bay at Acapulco, I read this on a site somewhere, so maybe I shall visit her there in a glass bottom boat instead and then go and see the cliff divers. I also want to go to the Chapel of Peace and see the cross. Looks like I shall need to find a really good taxi driver.
Travel Tips for Acapulco
Beach "La Caletilla"
by aventurera
This beach, "la Caletilla"is situated in Old Acapulco. here you can find the Middle class Mexican tourists which implicates that you feel more in Mexico.
Take a tour with a small boat "una lancha" and enjoy the typical Mexican atmosphere.
The water is very quiet and ideal if you go with children.

by bellagio
You must visit the flea markets. Here nothing is priced and you barter for the best deal you can get. Try to get some tips as to what things are really worth from fellow travellers. As a guide bid at least 50% below the vendors first asking price, possibly more, it is quite good fun. You will usually find later on that you paid too much money whatever you bid, so try other stallholders before buying and compare their lowest bids.
Andromedas
by Laura_Mexico about Andromedas
If you like electronic music this is the place to be -- it's one of the main discotheques in Acapulco. Located right on the Costera Avenue, you pay $25 USD to get in and you can drink as much tequila, vodka and rum as you want. It's a huge place with sea-themed decoration and they also have a show with a few dancers that come in every now and then. There's no special code, as people dress mostly casual while on the beach, but you should try to wear something nice as mostly everyone does.
Feeding the Fish
by SoCal_Chick
Got to go fishing with my Dad which was alot of fun. We had a good captain but unfortunately, only a few hits. We went out about 30 miles and the seas got pretty rough. The only thing pulled in from the side of the boat that day was me. :(
You can charter a private 1/2 day boat with Fish "R" Us for about $300 (US). Affordable if you split the cost with other people. They provide transportation, lunch and all fishing gear.
Barra Vieja beach
by Laura_Mexico
Go to eat to BARRA VIEJA, a place which is only a few miles away from Acapulco (about 27-30 kilometers south east from Acapulco, to be more precise and according to most of the sources I got my info from) and where you can have some DELICIOUS and fresh sea food. The "mojarra a la talla" (local fish cooked with a special condiment) and the "picaditas" (plain tortilla with beans, onion & cheese and hot sauce if you like it, YUMMY) are the specialties there and they're GORGEOUS!
However, when going to eat there, please be careful to ask for the price of the meal before you eat it! More details in my Tourist Traps section!
Besides the great meals you can have there, Barra Vieja is located on a 'virgin' beach, away from the crowds and pretty clean and lonely (it's not on the bay so it's open ocean, you gotta be careful), perfect to spend a relaxing afternoon watching at the sunset or sleeping on a hammock...
