Good value family hotel
We booked this hotel as part of a charter deal with Nolitours and it was exceptional value. We had not planned on staying at an all-inclusive, since we like to go out and explore restaurants in the area, but this was so inexpensive that it was worth it just for the room, breakfasts, snacks and beach bar and we still ate out most of the time. The rooms were lovely and clean and had everything we needed - nice bathroom, balcony, good closet space, TV with a couple of English movie channels. I've seen some tips complaining about leaky AC and run-down facilities but I'm wondering if that is in the other building which looks from the outside as if it may not have been renovated as much as the one we were in (Fontan 2). The check-in and check-out was smooth, as was the transportation to and from the airport. Wireless internet in the lobby. Staff were professional and helpful.
Food was typical for middle of the road all-inclusive but more local offerings than most. Quite a good choice at the buffet for breakfast and lunch. Dinner wasn't much different from lunch though so we skipped it most nights and went out. There is a nice a la carte we were entitled to one night of the week so we went there and had terrific coconut shrimp. Bar service was really good - too good perhaps - no skimping on the alcohol :) but only the lobby bar was open in the evening. There may have been a bar at the convention centre where the evening shows were but we never went.
Beach was well-kept with good beach chairs and umbrellas. Of course you had to get up at 7 to reserve your chairs at either the pool or beach with a towel. But I found it kind of annoying that people would reserve their chairs and then not show up all day. Got some good swimming in for a few days before it got too wavy, which is fairly typical for the Pacific side.
This is definitely a family hotel - lots of parents and kids, mostly Nationals, but everyone very nice. It was not busy at all before New Years but was suddenly packed for New Years and the few days after.

Price Increases Diminishes Value
I have been a fan of the Posada Real for years. The biggest reason has been the value. Unfortunately, the management has decided to raise their prices. Now, they are just as expensive as neighboring hotels that have ocean-front balconies! I cannot recommend this hotel any more on the basis of their value.
Unique Quality: They have a putting green and one of the better swimming pools in the area. I understand they have filed a lawsuit against Carlos & Charlie's (nearby) because of the noise level. I have never been bothered by the noise, but I keep the window shut and the air conditioning turned on.

Hidden Jewel
This hotel was once the workers' barracks when FONATUR (Mexico's Tourism Promotion Agency) first sponsored building hotels along the beach in Ixtapa. The Posada Real has been remodeled twice since then. It is the smallest hotel on the strip, it is also the best bargain. This hotel would be a four-star hotel if the rooms had balconies (none have balconies). Most of the folks who go there are repeat customers, and many Mexican families will go there as well during holidays. This hotel has a first-class restaurant, two swimming pools - the one along the beach may be the nicest pool on the strip - the other is to the side of the hotel and is a quiet, restful pool. I have stayed there several times and, unless you want to spend all your time in your hotel room, is a great bargain.
Unique Quality: Inexpensive with high quality, gracious and polite staff. Their restaurant is way above average. Try their breakfast buffet or enjoy some of the imported wines in their restaurant.

Big Yellow Blocks
I highly recommend staying at the Fontan hotel which is very clean and has a lot of entertainment during the day with activities, and at night with the excellent shows. This hotel is located in Ixtapa in walking distance of many clubs and bars.
Unique Quality: Although, the Fontan isn't the prettiest (it's very yellow), it has gorgeous ocean views, decent food, great GOs, and a nice beach volleyball court. If you walk a little up the beach, you can find an alligator zoo and a cliff you can climb if you want some nice pictures.
Fontan beach resort is great if you aren't expecting much. If you want something spectacular this isn't the place to go. IF all you want is a nice beach and all inclusive for cheap definetly go there.
What to expect: Front desk staff dont' speak english with exception of maybe 2 people. Make sure to put your important pieces of I.D in the saftety security box AS SOON AS YOU GET THERE! My friend lost his wallet with all his id and had so much trouble trying to get out of the country. Luckily he had an expired passport back at home he got someone to fax it to him.
Becareful of the tours. WE booked a snorkelling/sailing/fishing tour. We were under the impression we were getting a guided tour. with our rides from the marina and back included. They called us a taxi and as soon as we got there the driver wanted us to pay. WE didn't get a guided tour at all. Just make sure you know what your getting into. I heard it was better to just take a bus to the Ixtapa Marina or Zihuantenjo marina yourself and then just pay the a boat driver to take you across to the bay. Much cheaper.
Ixtapa is quite safe. You can walk around at night and don't have to worry. The people are extremely friendly.
If you want to use internet I would suggest to go across the street. In the shopping plaza there are 2 place i recommend. One is upstairs and they have 3 computers and it only cost $3/hour. the other one is on the main level. There is a store in the front with different kinds of furniture and in the back you can see she has 4 computers. Here it is $5/hour but if you dont' use all the time up she gives you a card so you can keep coming back.
Enjoy your holiday. Ixtapa is a beautiful place. I WOULD DEFINETLY GO BACK!!

For those of you that have already booked at the Fontan, enjoy your stay and don't read on.
For those of you who have not yet booked and are considering the Fontan, please read on....
The Fontan resort is a three star hotel, some even rate this hotel a two star. Please note the following about the Fontan:
1) You need to get up at about 6:00am in peak season to reserve seats at the beach or at the pool. 2) The staff at the hotel speak very poor english, so if you do not speak spanish, stay somewhere else. 3) If you have young children, please note that we found a poisonous fish lying in a bucket in the gardens of the hotel,by the table tennis table and that the rooms have sliding windows with no screens, so kids could fall out the windows. 4) The nightly entertainment is poor. Don't rely on this for evening entertainment. 5) The rooms & beds have a musty smell to them. 6) Christmas dinner and New years dinner are not included in the price. 7) The majority of the guests come from Mexico City and have very large families staying in one room and note that they pay $25 US a night per person all inclusive. (After seeing this I thought that it may be alot cheaper to book the flight and hotel seperately).
For the positive things:
1) The beach is great, just note that the water can get fairly rough with big waves. 2) The resturaunt at the hotel is great and you can eat there two times at your stay. Bookings can be made at the buffet resturaunt. 3) Location is good, the resort is right on the beach. 4) The rooms are clean. 5) Ixtapa island snorkelling tour highly recommended.
Overall, I had a good stay, but will not stay at a three star again. you can see a major difference when you compare with the other hotels in Ixtapa.

Stayed at the Fontan for 2wks starting Jan 2/05. Great weather , food was good, water was good from tap in room. The beer ( corona on tap was great and ice cold. Bring your own cooler mug and the fontan will fill with any of your drinks. Rooms are good if you can get a higher floor ( say 5 & up.) Great massage service on site ( 200 pesos for an hour & very good) 2 alacarte rests and no reso needed. service is very good , the staff work very hard. The beach is wonderful and the water is so warm (great body surfing). The Mexican people love this hotel so the weekends are really busy. My only complaint was not enough chairs for the pool and beach . Get up early if you want one! The hotel is close to all amenities, banks , shops , restaurants and is right on the beach. Great location.
Horrible

If you want a seat on the beach, be prepared to be out at 6:00 am to put your towels on your chairs, broken chairs, and be prepared to come out a few hours later and someone has taken over your seat.
The balcony doors on the main floor do not lock and the repair men never show up. If something goes missing (money), you are told that you should have locked your door, but the doors do not lock.
Only expect to see one box of kleenex, the day you arrive, because you will never see another one.
Really watered down drinks.
Ask for a piece of paper and you will receive a summary sheet that lists the guests and the amount owing, information that I really don't want anyone else to have.
Sit, it is almost guarented.
Nice Beach
by TripAdvisor Member LethbridgeTraveler
I thought that it was a good place to go. It's not a 5 star for sure but the food was not to bad, the staff very friendly, the location excellent and the beach great. I will go back to Ixtapa just might try another Hotel along the same beach.
Moderate- nothing more nothing less

This hotel is moderate ..a 2 1/2 star I would say..The food was Good and some good choices of where to eat. Yes 6am is way too early to have to get up to save chairs..but I went to see the Barcelo hotel..and it was the same there !!! this is a new problem at resorts..I never ran into it until now.. the weekends are very busy with Mexican families..but if you don't want that then pay more and go to a more deluxe hotel. it is good value.dont be scared off by the bad reviews
