Looking for a decent destination...

by kc0ltv

What's a good place for a family of 5 (children aged 10, 15, and 17) to go in Mexico that isn't too touristy (like Cancun) fairly cheap, has interesting/fascinating attractions, preferably nice beaches, good food (I'm assuming I can find that almost anywhere), and is decently safe?

Thank you for your replies.

hi!

1. playa del carmen (mexican riviera). go to playadelcarmeninfo.com
2. zihuatanejo (pacific coast)
3. oaxaca (no beach - but incredibly charming)

good luck!

I agree with the suggestion of Zihuatanejo. There is a neighboring resort town called Ixtapa with many luxury hotels.

Playa del Carmen is perfect. From Cancun all the way down to Tulum there are places to explore including the ruins of Coba and Tulum and some amazing caves inwhich you can go snorkeling or diving. Chichen Itza is not too far away if you have a car it might be a good day trip.

Playa del Carmen is crap. Just a much touristic resort town with no Mexican flavour. Only the sea is worthy, but try Isla Mujeres then. Great beach!

It's not crap if your a family of five with little ones and all you want is a nice beach, and a place that is convienient and cheap. I don't think they are looking for a "mexican experience"

i would vote for isla mujeres.
it's close to the airport.
it still has avery mexican feel because foreign frachises are not allowed on the island and it has great beaches.
playa del carmen is not too bad but isla mujeres is better.

Yes, I would like such a thing, but at the same time want a resort-type place.

I think kids would be happier at Playa del Carmen. They can eat at McDonald's.

my wife & i have stayed at the qualton club twice now, & have been very pleased both times. it is a all-inclusive hotel, (which i highly recommend with a family of your size) there are daily activities for all ages, & a nice quiet beach. many mexican national families like to stay there. the staff is wonderful. there are nightly shows, with a different theme every night. the buffet style meals co-ordinate with the theme also. we stayed for 7 nights, & paid $1500 which included airfare from chicago, airport transportation, all meals & drinks, plus most the activities are free. we booked our vacation through apple vacations. well worth the money.

Travel Tips for Ixtapa

If you really want to go off the beaten path...

Besides the area right around Ixtapa and Zihuatanejo, the beaches are very much undeveloped so if you can get to them you're in for a treat if you don't like crowds. There is an amazing strip of beach between Playa Linda and Troncones that we went to. From the Ixtapa hotel zone heading north, take the bus to Pantla (about 20 mins for about 6 pesos). Pantla is a town of almost 4,000 people just inland. We walked through the village to the river, waded through the river (no bridge but it's shallow) and then followed a dirt path for 4-5km until you reach the beach. Absolutely amazing. There were a few locals with ATVs and a truck, which would have been much faster, but besides that nobody there.

It was very hot, as usual, but we brought a collapsible cooler with ice, water and beer, food, and a sheet to make a shelter on the beach. After a cold one and a dip in the gorgeous water it was worth the long trek. It was fairly wavey but not too bad. Apparently the area is fairly popular for surfing when the swells are good.

Ixtapa-Zihuatenajo

"Ixtapa"

We found a fairly deserted beach in Ixtapa, playa Linda, and it was great, just like we had the whole place to ourselves for the day. The beach and weather were perfect, nice and warm. We spent the day here, with a packed lunch and make-shift shelter. Ixtapa at night was pretty quiet, cause it was January. Most of Ixtapa seemed to be resorts and golf courses. We stayed in Zihuatenajo which is just a few minutes down the road.

"Zihuatenajo"

Zihuatenajo was a great place to stay. We stayed on Playa Madera but also went over to Playa la Ropa to sunbathe. There are lots of nice restaurants right along the beach, all pretty cheap. The town is pretty compact, you can walk from most hotels to the center of town where there is more restaurants and shops. We were there superbowl weekend and half the bars there were playing the game.
