I want to visit Lake Chapala and SMA as possible retirement locations. What is the best way to travel from one to the other and the time involved? What itinereary is best? I'll be coming from San Diego.

Hello,

I have been in Mexico for 2 months..I will be going to SMA in about a week or two....

I have been traveling by bus and have been very pleased by it...the car thing rquires some minor complications

SMA was given one of the best(4 pages) retirement places in a very good retirement book called 'CHOOSE MEXICO' by john Howles.

Travel Tips for Guadalajara

Don´t drink the water...the beer will get jealous

by cybercutie

One thing to remember when you go to the nightclubs in Guadalajara, is that the drinks can be as expensive as they are in Canada or the United States. However, the beer is still cheaper than the hard alcohol, sometimes costing half as much. In one particular upperclass nightclub, for example, a shot of tequila was 70 pesos ($6.50 US), but a bottle of Sol was only 35 pesos. AND be sure when you order hard alcohol, you know what brand you are getting...if not, they will give you the most expensive and your wallet will be emptied before your bladder is...

catalan food

Great atmosphere in this little, cozy and well located restaurant that specializes en the new wave of "slow food", all dishes are made from fresh ingreadients and from scratch that the reason taht takes a little longer to enjoy this nice exemples of food from east spain. owners and chef are really nice they take their time to talk to customers and explain recipes.. good prices. only 2 parking spaces . I only tried canelones barcelones,, canelonnis filled with kidney, chicken, beef meat converted into a paté , bechamel sauce and cheese. they have also paella and other regional dishes from Barcelona´s area.

Templo Expiatorio

by anagrettel

A Beautiful Catholic Church with Gothic Arquitecture. The design was made by the Arq. Adamo Boari ( the same famous italian arquitect brought to México by Porfirio Diaz, same that designed the Famous "Palacio de Bellas Artes" (Bellas Artes Palace) in México city and the "Edificio de Correo" (Post Office Palace) also in México city.

The building of the temple started in 1911 and ended in 1972.

It has an interesting German clock that at the Time of mass make 25 bells sound one of 25 song (religios and other typical mexican), at the sound of the music there's a pilgrimage of statues (saints)

Beautiful Historical City!

"Largest Cathedral In Guadalajara"

Almost all the Cathedrals in Guadalajara are large and very beautiful on the inside and outside. This one here has two doors on the left turret, that has all the characters of the birth of Jesus coming out one door and going back in the other door, while the Christmas Carols played!

"Christmas in Guadlajara"

Everybody is out strolling around the Plazas doing last minute shopping and enjoying time with their children and the pleasant weather!

"Birth of Baby Jesus in Bethlehem"

Quite a beautiful Nativity Scene set up in one of the Plazas in Guadalajara!

"Rotunda built for Honoured People of Guadalajara"

This Routnda has a lot of Writers, Artists ,Philosophers and Politicians Honoured throughout the State of Jalisco. Some of the people were buried in a chamber just half a meter from the ground inside the Rotunda!

"Sierra Madre in Background of Lake Chapala"

Lake Chapala is the largest lake in all of Mexico. It is only 50kms. away from Metropolitan Guadalajara which is a beautiful mixture of Modern and Historic architecture rolled into one! Lake Chapala is a peaceful, beautiful place to go and relax and unwind. There are a lot of Canadian and American expatriots living in the simple beauty of the Lake. It is definitely a must-see if you are ever near Guadalajara. So close and yet seems so far away from city life!

"Magnificent Display for Christmas"

Half way across the building it says in Spanish Feliz Navidad( Happy Christmas) & Ano Nuevo(New Year) the other half of the building, with Christmas wreath and bow and bells!

"Santa working hard to make kids smile!"

Not only were there Santas around the Plazas, they were running around day & night in the backs of pick-up trucks singing to the children.

"Theater of Guadalajara"

This is one of the oldest buildings in Guadalajara. It is their Theater(Teatro) which was built back around 400yrs.ago with the round Pillars out in front!
