Clean and simple, economy hotel
Hotel Azteca is one of several economy hotels on Calle Madero in the old part of Puerto Vallarta. The staff was helpful and friendly. The room was simple, but it was cleaned daily and had a hot shower. This is the kind of place where young Mexican and international travellers stay to economize. There is a small balcony lobby on each floor where you might strike up a conversation with visitors from another country. Our room was $30 USD per night plus we tipped the maid a few dollars. It was a 6 block walk to the beach. Several nice family-owned restaurants were within a block or two. Since we divided our time between exploring art galleries and the beach, the location was fine.
Unique Quality: If you don't mind walking a few blocks to the beach, you can't beat the price. The guide books say that this is the nicest of the economy hotels on this street, but there are several others that look just as good from what I could tell walking by.

Our Home for a Week
The first night at Hotel Azteca we stayed in one of their interior triple rooms (230 pesos/night). It was tiny and the hot air just hung in the room despite the ceiling fan. Since we were staying a whole week, we decided that the small room wouldn't work and we upgraded to a three person cocineta for 400 pesos/night.
In the cucineta room, we had two beds, bathroom with shower, a kitchenette with fridge and utensils for cooking, a small dining table, a TV, a celing fan, and a balcony. It worked out great for us, we had enough space to spread out and make it feel like home. It was clean and nice enough that we enjoyed hanging out there after a long day at the beach. I would definetly stay there again.
Unique Quality: A 50 peso deposit was required for use of a towel. Also, just so you know, this hotel is about 6 blocks from the beach, but it is close to some great restaurants and we enjoyed the walking.
