Extremely Disappointed!

by TripAdvisor Member LuvLuxury

Stayed at the Casa Velas January 01/06 to January 08/06 through an RCI exchange. What a disappointing experience! We had booked a one-bedroom suite but upon check-in our room was downgraded to an ordinary hotel room that was dated and ordinary. They also increased the amount we had to pay for the mandatory all inclusive. We were told we could have the one-bedroom suite if we “paid for it”. We were extremely upset and unwilling to “pay” an even higher inflated rate for the all inclusive to get a better room. The front desk staff were rude and unyielding even though the resort was almost empty.

While the resort is in a lovely area, most of the staff are very slow and not at all helpful. They obviously resent not being tipped as much with the new all inclusive format as they were when it was a hotel. The beach club was very nice but, again, the staff treated us as if we were intruding. The only friendly staff were by the pool.

We have stayed twice previously at the Velas Vallarta and expected the same level of courteous and friendly service. We were hugely disappointed and would not recommend this resort.

Lovely hotel but such a pity about the NOISE

by TripAdvisor Member Tomtiger

We arrived at the Quinta Real after an exhausting day's travelling from London, England. The journey was not made any easier by the lengthy queuing involved to get through security at Houston, Texas where we had to change flights. Additionally, at Houston, we had to retrieve our heavy baggage and check it in again for the connecting flight to Puerto Vallarta.
We were met and transported to the Quinta Real efficiently where we arrived at 9.30 p.m.. We were given a warm welcome, including a glass of champagne. We were taken to our room and it was then that we had our first concerns. The room smelled of stale tobacco smoke. There was a Jacuzzi, but no bath tub. Like many English people we are not "in to" Jacuzzis. There was a loud background noise from a large ventilation/air conditioning unit at the front of the hotel. This kept up all night, every night. The night was also punctuated by the noise (very loud) of jet aircraft taking off from the airport (about a mile away).
First thing next morning we asked if we might change rooms, and this was done courteously and efficiently with much regret being expressed by the staff that we had not been happy with the first one allocated to us.
The facilities at the hotel were otherwise good. The pool area where we had breakfast and dined in the evening was pretty well perfect. There was a well equipped gym. The spar facilities were not up to our expectations and there seemed to be insufficient staff there to give a proper service.
While it was made clear to us that the hotel was not on the sea front, we were disappointed to find that the skyline was dominated by high rise hotels and condominiums. We were unable to see the ocean from the hotel at all.
Although our second room was quieter, we could still hear the noise of the ventilation unit, and we became acutely sensitive to the sound of flushing of toilets in other rooms. Some of the other guests were amazingly insensitive to the comfort of others, coming in at 3 or 4 in the morning wearing shoes that clacked loudly on the marble floors, and talking at full volume in the walk way outside our room. On two nights we had to go out to the concierge in the lobby and ask him to turn off the music that he was playing and which disturbed us. On our last night I was woken by someone throwing up at about 4.00 a.m. in the toilet of the bedroom next to ours. This disgusting noise went on for about half an hour.
We liked Puerto Vallarta (it was our first visit to Mexico) but were disappointed that what is described as being its most luxurious hotel afforded us less peace and quiet than we normally experience in our own home in a busy part of central London.

not what we expected

by A TripAdvisor Member

We should of listened when people say no one is here, they were right its a ghost town. We knew it wasnt on the beach but I guess I thought you could see it or feel the breeze , nope. Right away when we got to our room it stunk of mildew I'm sure a higher floor would of helped, but we couldnt even sit out on the balcony because what people there were kept walking right past our balcony to get to theirs. Needless to say the staff was nice and understanding when I checked out after an hour, I thought we wanted to be alone, but that was too quiet. Anyways, if you dont want to see or hear the ocean and don't want anyone to bother you, this is your place.

A wonderful oasis in PV

by TripAdvisor Member Luvthebeach

We spent Jan and Feb in PV staying at both private rentals as well as hotels. We stayed at Quinta Real for 6 days and loved it. The staff was more than accomodating and friendly. The property is extremely well cared for and clean - the only caveat is that our first room had a very musty smell - but we were moved to another room with no problem and this room was great. The pool area is large, clean and relaxing - not crawling with hundreds of rowdy guests or children which is the norm at most hotels in PV. Frankly my husband and I relished the solitude. Although QR is on a golf course and not on the beach, they will transport you to their beach club just around the corner. Since swimming in the ocean in PV is not particulary inviting/safe, we actually enjoyed the pool much more than the beach club. My husband used the workout area daily and was impressed by the facilities available in the spa. Food and drink prices were on the high side for PV but if you are just having a few drinks at the pool it shouldn't be a huge issue. Lovely den with free internet - this was a nice bonus since being away for an extended time we normally had to use crowded interenet cafes. Quinta Real is one place to which we would definately return.

Stay Far Away

by A TripAdvisor Member

We stayed here for the second part of our honeymoon (stayed at the Hacienda San Angel for the first part) and this was just a sad ending to what is supposed to be one of the best times of your lives. The rooms are musty - the staff is nice but they are clearly unhappy with the all inclusive aspect (which as it turns out was the only positive to the experience...the food WAS good). The grounds are pretty but lack everything you should recieve when paying about $300 per day for 2 people. The rooms are awfully musty and the step in shower IS a hassle. I travel with great frequency and would compare this to a 2 star hotel - save your money and go elsewhere. They are making a killing on a "has been" hotel.

Thank you for your reply. We are looking forward to the vacation. I wonder if you can visit the other property if you stay at one.

Honeymoon at Grand Velas, Nuevo Vallarta

by lalissa123

We are planning to spend 5 days at the Grand Velas all-inclusive resort the last week of May. Anyone been there or know anything about it? I am hoping i picked a good spot. Also has anyone been on the sailing expedition or the dolphin adventure? what else is there to see in that area. Thanks!

I haven't been there, but just booked a week there for July. Do let me know how it is. I've read nothing but rave reviews about it (for those looking for luxury, spa services, fine dining and relaxation.) I know it's a big resort, but I just want to basically lay on the beach all day and do nothing. I just got back from a one-week trip to Mexico City and San Miguel de Allende--it was fantastic, high-energy (at least Mexico City and Guanajuato) but now I need a "vacation from my vacation."

Vallarta birthday party in May

by wingo2u

I'm taking my wife and her sister to PV May 19 thru the 27th and want to plan a surprise birthday party for both of them. Any ideas about location, food and music? They are both in mid 30's. I am also planning on inviting 30 to 50 people to attend, both locals and travelers, maybe you. Any suggestions would be great. If you will be there at that time, or live there, let me know.

I don't know the name but, if you go to this site and click the Panorama shot, it is the palapa restaurant right of the last building on the beach.

Thanks for responding. I'll check it out. It's so hard to set something like this up long distance, so I may have to put it together after I arrive. Thanks again, Wayne
