disposable cell phone

by macshe

Hi, I am going to PV next week and usually don't worry about having a phone, but my mom isn't well and so I will need one this trip. What is my best bet for getting a pay as you go cell phone to use for 2 weeks? Thanks

Depending on what phone you currently have you may be able to just go to a TelCel store (they are everywhere) and get a chip for your existing phone. Typically they come with 50 or 100 peso's worth of calling "power." Then if you need more, you just get a card for "N" amount of Pesos and go through a TelCel process of "activating" the minutes based on the serial number on the purchased card.

You may also check your current provider to see if they have a Mexican plan. I know AT&T does as I use my iPhone in Mexico all the time and just burn minutes.

ALL phones in Mexico must be registered now. Just go to any provider, pick up a $30 phone, it will have some minutes on it.
Take your passport and travel documents with you, you will need them.
Have fun

Travel Tips for Puerto Vallarta

south of rio cuale

by rkearns

yeah you can exchange them at the exchange booths on the street in PV.. i think it's more expensive at the airport, but why not just use your atm card? you may get a better rate just using that than exchanging money. imo, the best place to stay is south of the rio cuale. (zona romantica) you will find everything you need there, including internet cafe's and exchange counters, supermarkets, restaurants, the beach (which is quite dirty and overloaded with mexican tourists) ... well, and tourists from everywhere, depending on the time of year. you will be bugged on the minute to buy souvenirs. so expect that. anyway, i would avoid the airport. it's crazy when you step out of baggage claim. pteople attack you with "taxi, cheaper". just walk on through. there is a bus line just to the left of the entrance that you can get on that costs something like 70 cents. the blue one going to "centro" i believe. maybe someone can correct me on that..

internet in puerto vallarta

by rkearns

mcdonalds has wifi. they just give you a passcode and don't charge.
also, the internet cafes there are really cheap. i was there in august. i think i paid like 3 bucks an hour. depends on where you go.

Mismaloya Beach

by Carmanah

A favourite location nearby is Mismaloya Beach. It's located a 10 minute drive south of Puerto Vallarta at the foot of the rainforest-covered mountains. This is the famous off-the-beaten-track town in which the 1963 movie "Night of the Iguana", starring Elizabeth Taylor, was filmed. Despite the one or two large resort hotels at Mismaloya, Mismaloya wasn't a large area. There were several little restaurants, all located under thatched-rooved huts, where roosters, hens, pelicans and dogs would scramble around and take shelter from the monsoon rains. It was quite the unique atmosphere - something that we didn't get in Puerto Vallarta itself. A fond memory of mine at Mismaloya was walking through a trail in the rainforest, and being surrounded by a cloud of colourful butterflies. They were fluttering from plant, to plant... in every colour of the rainbow.

Local Sounds

by Pat&ZoAnn

As seen from our hotel window, this fellow drove down the street every day, sometimes numerous times, ringing his bell. It turns out, he was selling water.
Get to know the local sounds, so you can take pictures, rather than be annoyed.

Everything you need to know to bring

by Mindy_J

as many as you want. hey I'm a woman tennis shoes (old ones) for the canopy tours, beach sandals of course anti-diareal pills, tums/rolaids (spicy food), shampoo special for chorine removal (for your hair & to rinse your suits out with nightly). water camera, unless you want to spend 25.00 for a water camera there. fold down cooler (to pack with beer), your own snorkling gear (on your own beach) thermal cup, to keep drinks cool.. resort bars will rinse them out & make you drinks in them! Keeps the sand out too.
