Does any one have information concerning the small villages in the Puerto Vallarta area? These are away from the tourist scene in PV. Are there accomodations there? Any archeological sites, petroglyphs?
Thanks

PST (Gumly Gumly -17) 1. villages, etc.

There's a small museum in PV on the Rio Cuale Island. Maybe be worth a small trip if you are scampering around Old Town and the Rio.
I would also suggest booking the excursion where you take a small plane to San Sebastion, an antiquated mining town from the early 1600's- still very quaint, a coffee plantation, 150 year old hacienda, and many artists...I think it's about $135.00 per person, but well worth it. The plane they use is a 14 person cessna made for tours in the mountains...
There is a place outside La Penita where there is an Huichol archeological site. It's called El Santuario de Alta Vista, not widely known. There's a few waterfalls (in rainy season) petroglyphs, carvings dating back 2300 years, "Eye's of God" and other religious objects left recently by the Huichol Indians as it is one of their religious sites. Closest villiage is Alta Vista, very poor, main means of money is through growing and selling coffee.
Bucerias has some wonderful places to explore. There's many little beachside palapas on the way to the tip of the bay near Punta de Mita. I suggest taking the bus from Bucerias into El Anclote for some incredible beachtime...wonderful beaches there, and the palapa beach clubs are wonderful. I prefer the El Dorado.
I hope this gives you a few ideas of places you can explore on your vacation.
Now to add to this post: Sayulita, La Penita, and Rincon Guayabitos are all worth exploring. La Penita area has some cool beaches, many along the jungle where you can still find spider monkeys, maybe a panther, parrots, etc. All are worth the short bus ride from PV- under 1 1/2 hours. All have some forms of lodging...budget to expensive.
To the south, you have Las Aninmas and Yelapa- with Yelapa having accomodations. Both are by water taxi only, catch in Boca de Tomatlan for about $6.00. Neither have electricity, but Yelapa runs a generator until 9:00pm. Yelapa has a small town, you can buy somethings, and see the waterfalls, etc... very laid back and hippy-ish...very friendly people.
Do a google search on any of these: Rincon Guaybitos, Sayulita, Bucerias, La Penita, Yelapa, and Tepic.

For budget hotels in the southside/Old Town try Emperador. Great location, budget prices, on the beach, perfect location!

You shouldn't have trouble finding a room since it's "off season". Go to Madero (a street parallel and just south of the river seperating El Centro from Old Town). Between $12 - $25 depending on # of people, if you get a kitchen, try: Hotel Castillo, Hortencia, Lina, Bernal, Ana Liz, Cartegena, Villa del Mar, Azteca (these go in order if you are walking inland). Also nice but a bit more $ is Hotel Yasmine on Basilo Badillo but it's only 1 block from the beach and much more charming (was $27-31 high season this year). Also on Basilo Badillo look at Posada de Roger (was $40 high season but they might make a deal if they're empty). It's a bit noisy but has a great little pool and rooftop sundeck. I've stayed there often and the people are friendly and accomodating.

skip las Palmas, been there 3 times, over-priced, not the best breakfast, instead go to El Tucan, Memo's Pancake House, or Papaya3.
Stay around in Old Town- go into Pitillal for seafood- Tino's...and make sure you hit the small villages north of the city- Bucerias, La Cruz, El Anclote areas.....cheap bus ride, all under an hour along the coast.
