safety of traveling now to Puerto Vallarta

by Sgalanter

With the problems and concerns with killings in Mexico is it safe to visit and stay in Puerto Vallarta. Any suggestions for an enjoyable, safe trip- thinking of end of February 2009

My wife and I just returned this past Sunday. Was there 8/7 and traveled around quite a bit for sure. Took the buses, and did a lot of walking, a lot of walking. In a nutshell...totally safe, period. The newspapers and the propaganda is so out of quack. Border towns, Mexico City...sure, we don't go.
2007 FBI stats....1.3 million, murders, forceable rapes, including hostage takings, and that's on their site, are the figures for the good oh U.S.A.
Maybe the tourist from other countries ought to know that figure. We walked around after midnight, and felt totally comfortable, and have been going to Mexico for the past three years pretty regularly. Enjoy...

Yes, I would agree. I live in small town Mexico and everything is great here! The border towns and Mexico City are the big problems, but even in Mexico City, if you use discretion, you should have no problems. Again, think of all the crime in NYC, LA, Rome, London, etc., does that keep you from going?

Just don't go down to sell drugs. It's high risk no matter where you are.

Travel Tips for Puerto Vallarta

Riding in the jungle

by aventurera

Take the public bus who looks like an old american schoolbus from the Simpsons towards Boca de Tomatlan . Once there look for Pedro Lopez a native guide mexican cowboy who takes you for a cheap price horseriding in the jungle towards "El Eden " where you have a nice waterfall. His horses are very good animals and he is charming here you have his e-mail if you want to contact him to make reservations . flip@pvnet.com.mex and phone number 22 8 09 43 My fondest memory are the peace and nice landscapes I found back in Playas " Las Animas" a nice secluded beach that you can only reach by boat.

Early Morning Walks

by jamiesno

I used to love being up early on a couple of occassions and be the first one to take a walk on the beautiful beach after the waves had made it smooth again from the previous days activities.

You can see from this picture it was great.

Nice on the feet too!!

MONEY - BANKS - ATMS

by Skye_Miles

MONEY
The money here is the PESO. The exchange rate varies but remains near 9.0 for US and 5.5 for Canadian. You have several ways to exchange your money.

BANKS
You can change money at the banks Monday through Saturday from 9am til 1pm only. You will get the best exchange rate here.
CASAS DE CAMBIO
These look like little bank teller windows located all over the place. Normally open 7 days a week from 9am til about 10pm. Good exchange rate.

ATM MACHINE
These are accessible 24 hours per day and are popping up everywhere! Excellent rate of exchange (based on exchange rate in Mexico City which is usually a bit better). You will ONLY receive pesos. The charge is normally whatever your bank charges you at home to use the machine.

exchanging pesos for dollars at trip's end

by susiemargare

toward the end of your visit, try to estimate how much more you will want to spend, because the exchange rate from pesos TO dollars is not as good as the other way around. you want to end up with very few pesos at the end of your stay. there is not much point in keeping leftover pesos until 'next time,' because it is very likely that their value will have decreased by then.

there is a red cross box at the airport where you can deposit your leftover pesos, and the shops at the airport will take pesos, dollars, or a mixture. sometimes i buy postcards at the airport if i have just a few pesos left.

Beach Volleyball

by scoffy991177

In Nuevo Vallarta most of the beaches are larger than in Puerto Vallarta. There's beach volleyball at all different resorts and lots of people like to play! there's tons of other sports you can do, almost anything.
