Best Time of My Life!
by A TripAdvisor Member
Viva Vallarta is great! The food, drinks, hotel and everything were awesome, but the activity guys are to die for! They're all so friendly but Ramon was deifnately the sweetest guy there. He makes it really hard to leave! I'm 15 and I would definately recommend going there if you're 4 years old to 74! The shows were fantastic too and they really had some talented people. Thanx Viva, you guys gave me an amazing week.
One More Time

While staying at the Viva Vallarta Resort in Puerto Vallarta I had one of the best times of my life. Mind you I am 17, I have been to Mexico 4 times and this was by far the best trip yet. I traveled with a group of students/friends that I have travled with for the past few years and it was insane. The last time that I stayed in Puerto Vallarta we stayed in town and that couldn't even compare. The resort may have been a little far from the city, but the one night we went downtown and then said, "the hell with this let's go back to the resort", come on who can beat all inclusive beer and mixed drinks, food, and crazy beach parties. This resort has a very beautiful, lush setting with a great view and beach. As this was the last time that I would ever again travel with this group of people due to college, I am very glad that we stayed at the Viva Vallarta Resort. You'll have the time of you'r life.
Just what we wanted

I just got back from a week at Viva Vallarta with my 4 year old. It was perfect for us. I have been to PV before so had no desire to go into the town. If you do, be prepared for a long local bus ride, the hotel shuttle or an expensive cab ride. We didn't bother to go in. We did take the local bus about 10 minutes west to a local beach at Punta Mita (where the 4 seasons is located). This beach was awesome. Not many people (very few), Corona beer on ice for $1.20, great sand and beautifully clean ocean water.
As for the resort, it had many positives and a few not so positive. The Kid's club is AWESOME (Brianda is great). Most kids who were there with families wanted to go to the kid's club. Especially the younger kids. The rooms were spotless, with soda drinks replaced daily. The air conditioning works great and there are several TV channels if you really want to watch TV. Try to get a room on the 1st or 2nd floor otherwise you'll be climbing more stairs than you need to. The grounds are beautiful and I couldn't believe how well maintained the gardens are. Every morning I saw people out cleaning the pools properly (not just tossing in a couple of drops of whatever). The kids's pool is great for little ones and then the other two main pools are suited for everyone else. The adult pool is located quite a bit away from the main area and I couldn't hear a thing from the main area (which gets quite noisy). It was truly relaxing. The food was good. Of course it's not a North American 4 star dining establishment so don't expect it. But there was a wide variety of food, which everyone should be able to find something to eat. No, it doesn't have Denny's food, but you're in Mexico. I never did eat in the other a la carte restaurants but from some other people I heard that it was nice to get a bit more variety and better service. THe snack bar made pretty good pizza and hamburgers if you got the munchies. Yes, the drinks were very weak. I didn't tip out to get more alcohol added, maybe I should have. The serving staff was not as friendly as I have seen at the Melia but not rude either. We ordered room service for two of the morning breakfasts as I was tired of stuffing myself that early in the morning. THe entertainment was good. The performers are the regular staff and they do a great job of combining all of their roles at the resort. My daughter came down with Toncillitis when there so I can assure you that the medical care there is very good. The doctors live at the resort and they are a father/son te
I had insurance the price was not ridiculous (60.00 consulation fee to be paid up front). As for the time share, I managed to stay clear. I did talk to someone who said that compared to the rest of the time share pushes in PV, this one was very low key and worth listening too. I didn't want to give up 2 hours of my time, so told them that. Just watch for the people in the shirts that say CLUB VIVA. They're the time share people. All in all, a perfect vacation if you just want to stay out of the town and relax. Not a party place. Have fun.

Weather great. Food inedible. Excursions cancelled. Hardsell on timeshare. Remote. If you are looking for cheap this is Valhala. I wasn't. Beach rocky. Drinks cut. Spend a little more and go 1st class. Americans few and far between!
Good Vacation

Viva Resort north of P.V. was a nice holiday for the price. Friendly, clean, no problems with the drinks, room cleaning was daily and early in the day- good job done by the maids. The entertainment was good, and my family found the food generally very good, compared to other 3.5 star resorts we have stayed at. I reccommend a bus trip to Punta de Mita, north of Viva. We never talk time share with anyone anytime. The beach is great for the kids to investigate - we saw whales every nite from the infinity pool for adults only, that was adults only.
A quieter resort not close to downtown.

Transportation
by newbie2
My friend and I are going to PV for the first time in March. We are actually staying in Nueva Vallarta at the Wyndham Viva Vallarta. I'm wondering what our best option for transportation is - we need to get from the airport to the hotel and back (obviously) and we also need to get to the Marina in PV for some excursions (whale watching and such). Should we rely on taxis (are they expensive?) or would it just be better to rent a car? Thanks!

I'm heading down in March also...A strange coincidence is that my timeshare is at the Nuevo also...I usually take a taxis from the airport, make sure you go to the taxis stand inside the airport and pay there...they will ask for your destination and give you a reciept to take outside...you can tip your driver a buck or two if you like after he drops you off...A car rental would be a good idea if you are going to be traveling alot...but its expensive and it depends how adventurous you are....If you do rent a car...you may be able to skip some of the excursions that aren't on the water, like going to Mismaloya or up to where they filmed predator or night of the Iguana. If you have any questions I'd be glad to help...email @ dl_wolf@hotmail.com...Good luck

Hi! Taxi's are definately the way to travel there, unless you know your way around and plan on travelling often. They aren't that expensive, I've stayed around Nuevo Vallarta and they are very convenient. When we rode the buses, we had a hard time getting back to Nuevo, and couldn't figure our where our stop was...but that was just us at the time..haha. So I suggest Taxis, and going through the jungle and places they do tours so you dont have to drive. Hope this helps!
Money exchange
by chitown2
Heading to PV for 4 days in March and staying at an all inclusive (Viva Vallarta). I'm wondering how much of my $$ I should exchange into Pesos. Since the resort is all inclusive (including drinks & tips) the only thing we'll really be spending money on is shopping, buses/taxis and excursions. Do most places accept dollars or are pesos preferred?
Thanks!

I generally just bring my (US) ATM card and withdraw pesos. I bring about 200 pesos or whatever I have sitting around from previous trips with me for tips and such until I can get to an ATM. There might even be one in the airport...

I like the ATM method too. While living in Mexico City a few years back I discovered that not all ATM networks were compatible with my cards (from Canada and the U.S.) but there are always some that are.
Besides the convenience you always get the most current rate with the ATM. There will be an increased fee (typically $2.00 or $3.00) so just make sure to pull out enough each time to make it worth it.
