HIgh and Dry
by m1nkey
Guadalajara and the enire mega city that includes Zapopan, Tonala and Tlaquepaque, are very high in altitude. 5200 feet and the air is very dry. Drink plenty of water, cover your head and dont forget the chapstick and sunblock. Skin lotion and comfortable walking shoes are a must also.
Getting around the city

It seems that everywhere you go there is someone to help you out, and they would like a tip, most times. You can tell when someone is just helping or if they are providing a service. I've found that if you take the time to learn a few words of spanish, and be polte, you will have plenty of friendly guidance. Don't be a typical loud pushy American because you will get the same in return. THis holds true for almost any spot in the world. The mexicans are friendly, very Catholic and down to earth. Respect that and you will have a wonderful experience here.
If you plan on an extended trip then you should definatley try to practice good manners. THey are a conservative culture.

"La Basilica de Zapopan"
Zapopan does not belong to Guadalajara !

"A few of our favorite spots in Zapopan"
The Historic area of Zapopan is a must see when you are in the area. It isnt as big as Guadalajara but it has some amazing sights and a lot of history. The Basilica here was started in the 1600s and houses a museum of local history. THere are services in the cathedral everyday. The plaze is full of sculpture and landscaping. The street market has many shops and restuarants. You should reserve a day just to enjoy this area.
