Travel Tips for Morelia

The 'Tarascas' Fountain

by Laura_Mexico

This is the symbol of the city. It is located in the intersection of 2 of the most important avenues in town, and not very far away from downtown. Right in front of the Acueducto, it shows 3 Tarasco women (this is an indian group which inhabited the zone many centuries ago) holding a big basket above their heads. There is a nice little park next to it and the general view is really lovely.

One of the streets meeting here (Francisco I. Madero) will take you directly to the very heart of town, right in front of the Cathedral, the handcrafts market, and many other attractions. And right in front of the fountain on this same street there's an ice cream shop where you can buy some very nice lemon popsicles -- they were YUMMY on a sunny day! The other street runs along the Acueducto towards the east.

Cerrada de San Agustin. Juarez Statue.

by euzkadi

Located at the end of the pedestrian street there´s a huge statue of Benito Juarez. He is another important Mexican leader who was president of Mexico twice (1867 and 1871), and was one of the leaders who fought the French Invasion, and declared the Republica. Here´s a a brief part of his famous speech given after the triumph of the Republica "May the people and the government respect the rights of all. Between individuals, as between nations, peace means respect for the rights of others".
