Travel Tips for Pátzcuaro

Cueva de Leones de Patzcuaro

by mtncorg

In the two days of eye clinics, we were able to see over 300 patients, giving out glasses or arrnaging for other needed services - ie cataract surgery. It was my first clinic trip and the experience was very fulfilling both from the aspect of providing a service that many people in the area did not have a chnace of receiving, but also in the interactions with the local Lions members and our interpretors who all worked very hard in making the clinic and our stay in Patcuaro a very enjoyable one.

Day of the Death Celebration.

Pátzcuaro is a small village located in the western higlands of the State of Michoacan, it´s a very beautiful and interesting city famous for it´s All Saints Day festivity the 1th of november (celebrated in the city and in the Janitzio Island nearby) a mix of Catholicism and pre-hispanic beliefs. The city is located in the Lake Pátcuaro surrounded by pines, oaks and eucalyptus and some mountains and volcanoes. Most of the city architecture is from the 16th century with great churches and big mansions. Friday is the market day for the villagers around the lake.

Patzcuaro, Michoacan

When you first arrive in Patzcuaro you notice that there are large, mature pine trees everywhere with their bases painted white presumably for the benefit of night traffic. This immediately sets the mood for the town with calming and cooling effect. Among Patzcuaro's advantages are:

It is a relatively small city of about 40,000 people.

There is a large lake of the same name with islands you can boat to.

At 7200 feet altitude it is delightfully cool here even walking in the sun.

There is not one but two plazas with sidewalk restaurants in the portals.

It has some of the best preserved colonial architecture in all of Mexico.
There are a multitude of daytrips you can take to archaeologic, craft producing, and other leisure locations.

Tourism has not overtaken things and prices are reasonable.
