Safety in Cuernavaca

by ladykate

Hello, I'll be traveling at the end of this month to Cuernavaca to visit a friend. While there I'll have tons of free time on my own, however I speak no Spanish. Are there enough English speakers that I will be able to explore the city on my own? Also, how safe is the city currently for someone such as myself (young, female, obviously American)?

you should be fine on your own in Cuernavaca even tho you speak no spanish at all

Cuernavaca is one of Mexico's more popular center for language studies

lots of foreign students here from all over and lots of americans definitely

aside from that, you'd never be far away from many mexicans who speak english

Since you have tons of time, why dont you enroll in one of the many Spanish language schools? You might be suprised how much you pick up in a short period of time.

I am planning to relocate to Cuernavaca in October or November. I am an independent scholar (female) travelling alone and eventually bringing my small dog. I wish reassurance about the safety/crime situation, as well as advice where to start with
a) inexpensive safe place to stay for a 2-week investigation trip;
b) inexpensive apartment leads/locations/etc.

I would be willing to pay someone US$10/hr. to spend a day during my exploratory visit.

Thanks!

Lisa

Travel Tips for Cuernavaca

TRES DE MAYO

by mtncorg

This community is just south of Cuernavaca, set atop a hill. It is a center for mass production of touristic ceramics. There are shops all over the main streets of the colonia and shopping busses bring Mexicans from around the country here to buy the ceramics in mass quantity.

We were here at the modern Catholic parish church, set atop the hill wtih a grand view of Cuernavaca and the high mountain wall to the north, to do a vision clinic in the parish rooms below the church. The church itself is a pretty, modernistic, open-air affair which lends itself to many community events.

Cuernavaca is a very popular sport for mexicans living in Mexico City. It takes about 50 minutes to drive from mexico City to Cuernavaca and it's here that many citizens have their weekend houses because of its warm and sunny weather. You'll also find great hotels and a lot of day and night life.
