I didn't want to stay in one of the mega hotels in Puerto Vallarta, so I looked for a place I could call my own for 5 days. I hit the jack pot with La Casa Palapa. La Palapa, by the way, is the name of those thatched umbrella stands you'll see on the beach. This house is located on a cliff overlooking the town on one side and the Pacific on the other.
La Casa Palapa has three bedrooms, four bathrooms, a kitchen, a pool, and all the other living areas are outside. This has to be the most unique home I have ever rented on a vacation. The weather was perfect and even though it was the middle of winter, we could sit outside and enjoy the sea breeze until late in the evening. I highly, highly recommend this vacation rental. The location was just north of the town - walkable in fact. Loved it. I want to go back. | | | | Grand Velas International: Spaaaaah! heaven in Nuevo Vallarta | Satisfaction: | | | | |
This all-suites resort was a great getaway for total rest and relaxation. Currently the resort has 161 studio, one- and two-bedroom suites, each with an ocean view looking out into Banderas Bay. I bought a 7-day all-inclusive package (hotel, lodging, taxes and gratuities) off www.LuxuryLink.com for $2300 (for two people.) This represented about a 50% savings off the normal rack rates of over $312 per person per night. Given that you have to pay the all-inclusive fees of at least $125-$150 per day (depending on the season) per person (two person minimum), this place definitely is pricey for solo travelers, but good for couples or families traveling together. The all-inclusive nature of the resort means that access to the three on-site restaurants, 24-hour room service, in-room mini-bars, drinks at the pool and lobby bars--everything is included in the price. Spa treatments are extra, but prices were comparable to luxury day spas in the U.S. (e.g., $89 USD for 50 min., $128 USD for 80 min. massages.) Non-motorized water sports are also free (pool aerobics, kayaking, snorkeling, boogie-boarding.) There are vendors on the beach who sell activities such as jetskis, parasailing, etc. All suites are at least 1,000 square feet, and simple luxury. Fine bed sheets, duvet and comforter, a "pillow menu" of about 8 assorted pillow types; 2 TV sets, DVD player...
Each suite has an ocean view, although our suite did include a view of additional construction going on at the resort. Still, there was a good view (see main photo on Nayarit page of the 3 Infinity pools at sunset.) The onsite restaurants serve amazing food. Visit the website and check out the pictures and menus for Lucca and Frida, their two dinner-only restaurants (no shorts or sandals allowed for dinner at these two restaurants.) For casual dining at breakfast, lunch and dinner, buffet and menu options are available at Azul, a beachside restaurant. The spa services are heavenly. During my one-week stay, I had two massages, a "Pressor Lymph Therapy" treatment (Google it--it is good for circulation and releasing toxins in the body), a pedicure and a haircut. Each spa treatment includes a "ritual" which involves time in the sauna, steam room, various pressure showers, a jacuzzi, a cold or warm plunge pool, and lots of individual attention. Soothing drinks are provided free, such as apple tea or chloryphyll juice. There are separate facilities for men and women. Each therapist that treated me was the utmost professional and attentive that I've ever experienced at a spa. Grand Velas is a great getaway for R & R. Check out TripAdvisor.com for other reviews, which are generally excellent. The only bad experiences seem to be from people who happened to be there during large conventions or parties. If you want to splurge, this is a great place to do so. Leave a Comment Theme: HotelPrice: US$120-180 » Currency ConverterComparison: most expensiveAddress: Av. Many wonderful features of this incredible house, but a couple of negative things that potential visitors should be aware of. More on both the positives and negatives below. In April 2007 my wife and I and two other couples stayed at this absolutely beautiful villa located on the north end of the beach at San Pancho (whose official name is San Francisco), a wonderful little village about a 45 minutes north of Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. San Pancho is a wonderful, quiet little town with some nice shops, a mile-long beautiful beach (though the surf is too rough for swimming), great restaurants and good hiking. First, the positives, which on balance outweighed the negatives. A lot of thought and attention went into the house and its beautiful grounds, so that the three main bedrooms are each very private--neither next door nor on top of each other. The various villa rental web pages for La Casa Palapa really don't do it justice in this regard, in that even the smallest of the three is quite nice. Like the other two, it has its own bathroom, private outdoor shower and outdoor sitting area. The living area is outdoors but covered by a huge palapa, and flows into an equally nice uncovered seating area, which in turn is bordered by a great infinity pool. To supplement the outstanding views, including of sunset, we frequently saw formations of pelicans, frigates and other birds drifting overhead as they made their way up and down the coast. Yet another nice feature of the house is that the entire water system is filtered, so no worries about getting stomach bugs. If you don't mind a bit of a steep walk returning to the house, it is a five-minute stroll to the beach and to the north end of town--though the part of town where most of the shops and restaurants are is perhaps another 15-20 minutes away by foot. (I use the next section, Unique Qualities, to describe the negatives.)
The negatives of La Casa Palapa are that at its current pace the house that's being built right next door to it, and just a few feet away from its pool, will cause construction noise until at least mid-2008 and, after it's finished, will block part of La Casa Palapa's view. (Hard to say yet how much it will block, since construction is still in its early phases and part of the new house is somewhat downslope from La Casa Palapa. Part of the view looking up the beach is already blocked by the new house, however.) Plus two of the bedrooms are quite close to the new house and the current construction. We were not pleased that the owner had not told us about this beforehand, especially since the appeal of the place is partly its privacy and quiet and he was there just before were, but to his credit he gave us a partial refund (without our asking for it) after we voiced our displeasure. I don't want to overplay the noise--it was not constant pounding, and the workers were nice enough to turn down their radio when we asked--but it did go on for at least ten hours per day, except weekends. A few much more minor things to be aware of are that: the tv monitor for playing DVDs is adequate but on the small side--though most folks probably won't want to spend much of their time in front of the tv; the internet connection is slow and spotty; and we did see a couple of scorpions, though they are not aggressive--you do want to check the sofa cushions and your clothes and shoes to make sure you avoid them. I know that the notion of scorpions is scary, but we got used to checking for them pretty quickly. Some might feel differently, especially if they have young kids. I would recommend Costa for a wonderful reason ... the feel, wonderful service and rate, friendliness. and good for singles, married couples or families. They will do special occasions with no problem or sometimes no charge. For an anniversary they will take your dinner table down on the beach and serve candle light meal. Met wonderful people from all over and had one Aussie couple put me in their jeep and take me to a local home where a sweet young hippy couple made funky gold jewelry. Some buy seasonal homes there also, if I had the money that is where I would park!
Very clean, family & friends working there very closely together makes a wonderful stay, laid back, flexibla, eager to please and so friendly. In the town od San Francisco of Nayarit. Has connections to te native peoples in the area so the Archeological hike is a very special one. They have a special area they take you to scuba diving into a hidden cove with a tiny private beach that rare and other birds nest in. Food and most drink are covered with just a little extra at time of booking and worth every cent! It is Fantastic food. Come down to the open air restaurant any time and order. Swim up bar. Surfing lessons and many different excursions. Horse riding on beach, birthday parties, theme nights and kayaks & bikes, some shopping trips etc.. Hidden away a bit and wonderfully relaxing.
