Grand Velas International: Spaaaaah! heaven in Nuevo Vallarta
by VdV
This all-suites resort was a great getaway for total rest and relaxation. Currently the resort has 161 studio, one- and two-bedroom suites, each with an ocean view looking out into Banderas Bay.
I bought a 7-day all-inclusive package (hotel, lodging, taxes and gratuities) off www.LuxuryLink.com for $2300 (for two people.) This represented about a 50% savings off the normal rack rates of over $312 per person per night. Given that you have to pay the all-inclusive fees of at least $125-$150 per day (depending on the season) per person (two person minimum), this place definitely is pricey for solo travelers, but good for couples or families traveling together.
The all-inclusive nature of the resort means that access to the three on-site restaurants, 24-hour room service, in-room mini-bars, drinks at the pool and lobby bars--everything is included in the price.
Spa treatments are extra, but prices were comparable to luxury day spas in the U.S. (e.g., $89 USD for 50 min., $128 USD for 80 min. massages.)
Non-motorized water sports are also free (pool aerobics, kayaking, snorkeling, boogie-boarding.) There are vendors on the beach who sell activities such as jetskis, parasailing, etc.
All suites are at least 1,000 square feet, and simple luxury. Fine bed sheets, duvet and comforter, a "pillow menu" of about 8 assorted pillow types; 2 TV sets, DVD player...
Each suite has an ocean view, although our suite did include a view of additional construction going on at the resort. Still, there was a good view (see main photo on Nayarit page of the 3 Infinity pools at sunset.)
The onsite restaurants serve amazing food. Visit the website and check out the pictures and menus for Lucca and Frida, their two dinner-only restaurants (no shorts or sandals allowed for dinner at these two restaurants.)
For casual dining at breakfast, lunch and dinner, buffet and menu options are available at Azul, a beachside restaurant.
The spa services are heavenly. During my one-week stay, I had two massages, a "Pressor Lymph Therapy" treatment (Google it--it is good for circulation and releasing toxins in the body), a pedicure and a haircut.
Each spa treatment includes a "ritual" which involves time in the sauna, steam room, various pressure showers, a jacuzzi, a cold or warm plunge pool, and lots of individual attention. Soothing drinks are provided free, such as apple tea or chloryphyll juice. There are separate facilities for men and women. Each therapist that treated me was the utmost professional and attentive that I've ever experienced at a spa.
Grand Velas is a great getaway for R & R. Check out TripAdvisor.com for other reviews, which are generally excellent. The only bad experiences seem to be from people who happened to be there during large conventions or parties.
If you want to splurge, this is a great place to do so.
