getting from mexico city to monterrey

by Sdas

hi. i'm coming from india to moneterrey in may end. i wanted to find out a cheap but quick way to get from the mexico city airport to monterrey.
are there cheap flights or fast trains between the two cities?
thanks. the help would be much appreciated

Re: getting from mexico city to monterrey

by Laura_Mexico

There is no train between these 2 cities, so the only way to go to Monterrey is by plane or by bus. If you go by bus it's a 12 hr. ride, so if you're on a hurry then you have to take a plane. The cheapest fares are with discount airlines such as Volaris, Interjet, Click (Mexicana partner). However, these airlines usually depart from the Toluca Airport, not Mexico city, so you would also need to transfer between airports to take those cheap flights to monterrey.

Try Viva Aerobus, a discount Mexican airline.

Travel Tips for Monterrey

by alguerco

Visit the Gran Plaza area and the Barrio Antiguo. Around the Gran Plaza you can find civic and religious buildings that gather the old and modern presence of Monterrey. One of these attractions is the kiosk, built in 1894, with its four bronze statues which are an allegory of the four seasons; you can also admire the Faro del Comercio which was built to commemorate, in 1984, the first centennial of the National Chamber of Commerce in Monterrey. Its 70 meters hight makes it the tallest monument in the Republic. It has a laser beam on top of it which lits nightly. Another interesting building is the former City Hall which is Monterrey's Metropolitan Museum nowadays. Many social and civic events take place in that building. To the southeast of the Gran Plaza you can visit the Contemporary Art Museum (MARCO) and see the magnificent sculpture by Juan Soriano called 'La Paloma', it is 6 meters high and weighs four tons. This museum was inaugurated in 1991. Across from this museum you can visit the Metropolitan Cathedral of Our Lady of Monterrey, built in 1770, and see a mural on the Franciscan Evangelization in the New Kingdom of León painted by Angel Zárraga. Going north, at the corner of Matamoros at Dr. Coss you can find the Chapel of the Sweet Names of Jesus, Mary and Joseph which is the oldest temple in the city. Its beautiful mountains. The Saddle Mountain which is the landmark of the city, the Sierra Madre with its Chipinque Mesa, the Huasteca Canyon, the Cerro de las Mitras, the Bishop's Hill, and the Topo Hills.

1. learn at least a few basic Spanish phrases, you would be surprised how much it is appreciated.
1a. In conjunction with that, try not to act like an American if you are one. Behave yourself and do not assume you know the best way to get things done.
2. After you established any type of relationship it is customary for men and women and women and women to kiss each other on meeting. Hugs between men are very customary.

Outside of the city you can find more interesting places

Grottos de García (like Caverns): they are at about 40 km. from the city of Monterrey, in the municipality of Garza García. You are arrive to them by a cable car and that travel the 16 rooms of underground formations.

Cascada cola de Caballo: is at about 36 km. from Monterrey in the National park of Monterrey. Presa de la Boca: near the same Cascada cola de Caballo is the dam 'Presa de la Boca', which is an ideal place to practice several aquatic sports, like fishing, ski, etc.

La Parola - bar none, it has excellent Italian food with a Mexican accent, great wines and a fantastic bar.

Other favorites include Luisiana (el centro); Grijalva (same owner as La Parola); Iberico near the San Agustin mall and the Quinta Real (a Spanish Tapas bar), El Gran Pastor, and Mesa Rica for decent general dining.
Great service; great prices and atmosphere and a great bar to wait in for your table. Steak Florentine at La Parola is a treat

Try the Cabrito anywhere in Monterrey (it is excellent at Gran Pastor). Only found in Monterrey.

For Breakfast have Machaca which is beef strips in eggs, a traditional Monterrey favorite.

Fun Interactive Overview of Mexican History

by Daniel_Williams

The Museo de Historia Mexicana (only in Spanish) was fantastic; my first trip to Monterrey I spent an hour here but felt I could have done much more! This hands-on museum offered much insight into Mesoamerican Prehispanic society. I find fascinating all the symbolism, advancements in science/mathematics, agriculture and architecture that were made in these ancient civilizations prior to the arrival of the Conquistadores! Learning is made easy & fun with interactive screens that allowed museumgoers to learn about the history of the Mexican forefathers by pushing a computer button. One can make selective queries on topics one wants to learn more about. I think kids with some knowledge of Spanish would enjoy this museum a lot.

This trip, I took my second visit to the Museo de Historia Mexicana to learn about the peoples I missed at the Museo de Antropolgia such as the Purhepecha, the Maya, the Toltecs, the Olmecs, the Zapotecs, the Totonaca. A nice place for people to go in Monterrey who want a quick overview of Mexican History. While there, the museum had a presentation on the omnipresent Jaguar and its importance in Mesoamerican mythology... fascinating.
