Monterrey, Saltillo, Ramos

by dtownkitty

What should I do in Saltillo? Is there anything to see in Ramos? How are the cabs? I will be there in the end of October or early November.

Thanks,

Jennifer

Saltillo it's like a big sleepy town. Not much to do.
Some good museums, and some decent resturants.
Ramos (Ramos Arizpe) is a nearby suburb with big factories, and nothing else.

The taxi service is good and cheap.

Nearby Monterrey (60 miles) and 4 million inhabitants, is more attractive, with night life (barrio antiguo), and all kind of tourist activities.

Good luck!

Of course I would go to Monterrey if I could but I can't. I will be in Ramos and Saltillo. I know there is not a lot to do there but if anyone has any more ideas that would be helpful.

Travel Tips for Monterrey

Monterrey is wonderfully friendly.

by liusia

People go out of their way to try to speak your native language, even if they really, really don't speak it. Hee.

The "backfill turkey" was actually really good. Worth all 165 pesos.

Even if your Spanish is pretty lousy, you should definitely use it. Folks are pretty patient if you struggle; using Spanish shows respect; and your dinner will sound more appetizing in Spanish than it will in mangled English.

Layers, layers, layers! The essentials

by psalcedo

If you plan on going to Monterrey, no matter the time or place, you should always layer. I personally always carry a sweater, because during the summer they turn up the air-conditioning (clima) pretty high. If it's winter, layering is also recommended. Regios tend to get very cold, with heat on at pretty extreme temperatures when the weather outside is chilly.

Far West Rodeo

by jorgeparada about Far West Rodeo

If what you want is to dance Tex Mex, Cumbia, and Traditional Norteño Dance, you can carry with your boots and hat and go to Far West Rodeo. Here you can see many people dancing in North of Mexico Style, and watch a Rodeo Show. Jeans, Cowboy Style

Mexican Fast Food (Watch out McDonald's)

by TexasDave about Dona Tota

This is a chain of Mexican fast food specializing in "Gorditas". A woman, Dona Tota, started with one stall in Ciudad Victoria, Tamaulipas and now they are all over Northern Mexico. Gorditas are thick corn tortillas that are sliced and made into a pocket, like a pita, and then filled with different meats, cheeses, etc.
I recommend cochinita pibil (pulled pork in a spicy sauce) and the mole. And in the long honored fast food joint tradition, they even have combos which include a drink!
