is it safe to drive from Monterrey to zacatecas?

by sonalva

My daughter and I are thinking about renting a car and driving to zacatecas is it safe? also how far is it how many hours?

It's about a 4 hour trip and is a straight shot down Hwy 40 out of Monterrey to Saltillo and then Hwy 54 to Zacatecas. From Saltillo onward it's quite barren so make sure you have a full tank and some refreshments. It's not dangerous but only travel during daylight hours. In some areas horses, donkeys, goats, etc roam freely and you don't want to meet up with one of them going 60-70 mph.

It's safe. I've done it in both directions. Try www.europcar.com.mx for reasonable rates that include full insurance.

Travel Tips for Monterrey

Spend an entire night out on...

by salsa_verde

Spend an entire night out on the town. (if you are a teenager or into that)
Start by hitting some bars, then if you want move on to antros (clubs). Wind down at another bar or hit the parks with a group of friends. One night i went out with my two girlfriends. we started at Applebee's with Electric Lemonaids- alcoholic. Then we went driving all around the city. we didn't find any antro we liked (too long of lines, too many of our regular places were closed for construction) so we went to Nirvana a hot bar located at Plaza Fiesta. (big mall). We were there until around 1am, when our guy friends called and met us there. We brought them back in with us. Stayed until closing at 2:30 and then went to a park near the mall. Stayed there until around 5:30am. then went home. I would reccomend sleep during the day and go out all night!!! unless you want to see the sights...?? :)

by arteimagen

The Garcias´s Caverns are excelents, discovered in 1843. TIP: everybody know the regular track (2.5 Km), if you are lucky you may ask for the large track (about 3.5 Km) only thursday at middleday. Outside the cavern and before you star to climb, point yours eyes toward the mountain and you can see a blue eyes gorila, and an indian profile (imagination is required). Inside are 50 millions years marine fossils.

Cerveceria Cuahtemoc

This is the brewery where they make Dos Equis, Sol, Carte Blanca, and Indio Beers. I've heard that there is a free tour that you can go on from Monday-Saturday. Unfortunately for us we went on a Sunday and didn't get to go into the brewery. Whenever you pull up to the front gates of the brewery you will notice a very peculiar smell, like that of roasted peanuts?, that was our guess anyway. Even though we didn't get to go on the tour we still enjoyed a free beer on the house in the beer garden.
