Jeff and Anna were by far the most accomodating host and hostess Ive ever encountered...

This is a TOTALLY relaxed SMALL hotel....when we were there there was a total of four rooms...three with cooking facilities...and the room that we used opened right out onto the dining area...a courtyard containing a few tables...and hammocks...surrounded by bananna, coconut and other trees and plants thatserved as shade and really created a cozy and intimate space.

This is not a regular hotel but more like sharing a home...Anna was originaly from Guadalahara....Jeff from Indiana...Jeff served tables at dinner time in shorts and an apron...and sandals....Annna cooked...SHE was an amazing cook...and accomodating and helpful.

The room cost us about $ 20.00 a night...as we were the only party that did not have cooking in theyre room...she would check with us when we were up and having first coffees what we wanted for breakfast...WE had discovered a place that we really liked the next town down so we would normaly just have coffee and then take a stroll down the way to Mazunte...passing by some stunning beach side and ocean views...

Every day she would "create" a "special of the day" for dinner and the little dining area would be full most nights...The menu was ormaly fish and chicken or beef....and served with salad and special deserts...

There was no pool and only one main washroom and a shared shower...

Hotel Gala: Stay where you can feel the pulse of life

  • Originally, we were booked into our travel agent/friend's favorite Hotel Marquez del Valle (next to the cathedral and facing the Zocalo). But they were in the midst of renovating and it was horrendously noisy, so we cast about, and found the Hotel Gala: across the Zocalo, just slightly down a street next to the Governor's Palace. A little less noisy and exposed. Very nicely appointed place. Twice during the next week and a half parades came down that very street to feed into the Zocalo and gather for their finale in front of the Cathedral: WONDERFUL!!! 12 foot tall munecas, small village marching bands, little girls dressed as angels in back of truck, people carrying tules, or decorations

Relatively limited in special features; very nice architecture, and has very good paintings by local, academically-trained artists. Well-managed. One of the bell-"boys" became our driver on several days, to go out to the villages, so we got to know him as well.

  • Well the hostel has been going through some changes.I spent a lot of time there and it is a bit more quiet now,and I dont give it as high a ´rating´as I would a year or two(2005) ago.I like the staff quite alot.I met plently of great travelers.I had a nice stay and just liked it a lot in general. For only $5-6 US. It has a variety of room arrangments doubles, triples,
not found in most of the others.

*A warning to some travelers. The hot water tends to run out(a.m.) in the shower sometimes.

Beautiful 'Garden' in courtyard and great variety of room arrangments.

    Encanto Jalatlaco patio
    by ohswaymyway
I stayed at Encanto Jalatlaco in Oaxaca last March (2005). Because it was Easter Week, the price was for high season: $100/night. It was definitely steep but still much cheaper than a 4star+ hotel, and it had the distinct advantage of feeling like home and home-cooked 3 course Oaxacan breakfasts. The owners were so gracious and friendly; fresh fruit and hand-squeezed juices were always available, and the decor was beautiful. There is also a pretty, relaxing garden with a patio (with a fridge stocked with beer and water gratis) and a hammock. They are so helpful too; when I was asking them for advice on where to find a temazcal (Indian steam ritual), the owner called the place and booked it for me knowing my Spanish wasn't that fluent. I definitely recommend this place if you have a bit more in your budget to splurge with. If not, the hostels are great, notches above the average hostels in Europe (with the notable exceptions of the Pink Palace in Greece and the place whose name I forget in Interlaken, Switzerland).

    *Included 3-course gourmet Oaxacan breakfasts

*Included bottled water and beer in the fridge

    *Beautiful landscaped garden

    *Private bathroom, fullsized bed

*Personal attention and service from owners
