Ancient Convent

I stayed here a weekend, we loved this hotel, the patios and gardens are really beautiful. You feel sorrounded for the ancient walls of stone. We only took the breakfast here in one of the restaurants, it was very good. The Staff is OK. The pool was cold but nice. Honestly the beds and pillows are not the best because they were very hard...

Unique Quality: This beautiful hotel is located in the downtown very near to the Zocalo (mail sqare), this hotel was built in 1576 as the convent of Santa Catarina, it was restored to role as hotel, it keeps the colonial style but now as a hotel is full or nice details... pool, restaurants and gardens.
One of the patios is very interesting because it still has one special fountain called "los lavaderos"(the laundry) where the sisters of the convent used to wash their clothes.

Atmosphere by the Bushels.

The Hotel Camino Real is a 16th century convent that has been converted into a luxury hotel, right in the heart of the colonial district of Oaxaca. We stayed there for 6 nights during the Day of the Dead festival in Oct/Nov 2005.

From the Bellmen at the front door taking your bags, to the maids and servers in the restaurants, the service was impeccable. It had a Four Seasons-esque quality, with fresh flowers in all of the courtyards and rooms daily, candles lit throughout the hallways and foyers at night, and musicians strolling the grounds in the evening.
You could lounge by the pool and have lunch served, sit in the library (also a bar) or walk right out onto the cobblestone street, just a stone's throw from the Santa Domingo Cultural Center.
Our room had very high ceilings with wooden beams, white-washed stucco walls and all the amenities of any luxury hotel.

Unique Quality: Being an old 16th century convent, the hotel didn't have a normal layout. There were many courtyards, nooks and crannies filled with pottery (and candles) everywhere. Fountains, and some original frescoes added to the ambience.
The restaurants served many local specialties, plus sandwiches and salads for when you get tired of Mole'.
On Friday nights, the hotel chapel is the site for the Guelaguetza, a display of the traditional dances of the region.
