Near Oaxaca

How far is the beach from Oaxaca?

6 or 7 hours by bus - 1 hour by air.

Not sure that it even takes an hour. We originally intended to drive from Oaxaca to Puerto Escondido but Alamo screwed up our booking - no cars. Long story but leaving the company to 'sort it out', walked out of the Alamo office, saw Aeromexico sign and enquired. On a flight next morning at the time we were due to pick up the car. It was cheaper to get return flight OAX-PRT-OAX and hire a car for 3 days in PE (we didn't need it for more than that) than hire the car for the planned 8 days AND we felt we gained an extra 2 days holiday - we were in PE by about 9am - and didn;t leave until approx 8pm on return.

Student/Teacher demonstrations at the Zocalo

by darthmilmo

There was some sort of teacher/student protest going on during the very same day I arrived to Oaxaca (May 31, 2001). The protestors where just seating down around the Zocalo. I quickly took refuge inside the Cathedral, which makes for an interesting stop on any trip.

Best equipment, but expensive: Calypso Gym, Oaxaca

by wavesport

There are two Calipso gyms in Oaxaca. This one is located in the Centro Historico area. The other one is located in the Reforma area (H. Colegio Militar #321-A). The gym has long hours opening 6:00 AM and closing 11:00 PM on Mondays-Fridays and shorter hours on the weekends.

The daily use fee is a whopping MX$110. If you're in Oaxaca for a longer time, you'll probably save a lot of money if you pay the monthly or yearly fee.

This place is very, very expensive compared to other gyms in Oaxaca, but the other gyms aren't as well-equipped. Since it is so expensive, I never saw very many people using this gym. If you can afford it, this is the place to work-out. A trainer is always available. The Calipso gym is the best (newest) equipped and cleanest gym that I found in Oaxaca. It had the best set of dumbbells and cable machines. It also had the most numerous and best selection of cardio machines. It had a steam room, sauna, and locker rooms.

The tree at Tule

by alza

Tule is about 15 minutes out of Oaxaca by bus and is on the tourist circuit for one large tree on the Plaza. I stopped to take measurements on my way to the Mitla archeological site. It,s worth a good look.

Teotitlan del Valle

by dila

After Tule tree we went to Teotitlan de Valle. Here you can see how they make carpets. It is very intresting. You can see how they did it before the Spanish came and brought the wheel.
Also how the color the wool and how they make the carpets. Ofcourse you can buy them too.
I did see a few nice ones but i think the prices are higher here.
Carpet for under my salontable would be 3500 and later 3000 pesos.
They colour the wool yellow with rockmoss and Mary gold flower
Blue = Indio plant
Red / pink a kind of insect on a cactus it looks like white powder. with a brush you get it off.
If you have the red you use lime and it turns orange
bakin salt it turns purple.
at 12. 20 we leave to Mitla spend 45 minutes here
