Small, beautiful & inexpensive hotel in Oaxaca

I was pleasantly surprised by the Hotel Maela during my January 2008 stay. After reading a so-so review, I wasn't expecting much, i.e., a little rundown. Instead, it looked and felt like a more expensive boutique-type hotel.

The hotel has nice decor, a good atmosphere, and it's well-maintained. They have off-street parking for their guests.

The single room was a bit small for my personal preference. It had a firm full-size bed, cable TV (no remote), and a ceiling fan. I've been told that the double rooms are a bit more spacious, but I have no first-hand knowledge. The only real negative thing that I found was that the water pressure in the shower was weak.

The single room rate at the end of January 2008 was MXN$435. Their website listed a single room rate at MXN$415, but that was their 2007 price so it appears their website isn't being maintained. At this rate, it's a fair value in a great location, i.e., near all the major Spanish language schools, a couple of blocks away from San Domingo church, and five easy blocks from Zocalo (town center).

Unique Quality: The rooms are clean and well maintained. It's located in a quiet neighborhood, but within easy walking distance to all the major tourist attractions.

If you call to make reservation, you will need to know how to speak Spanish. The daytime desk clerk is studying English, but her English skills are still weak.

Simple, clean, and friendly

We stayed at Hotel Maela near Santo Domingo Cathedral and it was very nice. The rooms were clean with television, free bottled water, only 45 bucks a night.
