watch the sunset
i think what makes the sunset in mexico so spectacular is that there are frequent storm clouds looming, making the color of the sky unusual. sunset photos rarely do the moment justice, but these are some i particularly enjoyed.

Can anyone describe what the rooms look like at Arco Iris? I can't find any pics anywhere. I hear the hotel is great and food is fine, but just wondering about the room and kitchenette. Bright, clean, spacious, comfortable beds.....I know, I know, it's Mexico!!! But any info will be appreciated. Going there in Feb/Mar so am excited!

I've stayed in this hotel, several times - but during the past 5 years. However, I continue to hear from friends who stay there that the place is the same as my last visit.
The rooms are nice, clean, roomy, etc. I don't know if all rooms have kitchenettes, but the ones I've rented have each had that feature. My beds were always comfortable (seemingly good matresses) and that the rooms are bright - there are large windows - but, I really didn't spend much time indoors during daylight, because there's a fantastic beach at the front door!
There's a nice pool, and one of the best restaurants/lounges (open-air) in PE on the upper level - with an awesome view of the ocean and sunset.
Most guests are foreigners, and the hotel and the staff tend to give service that international travelers have come to expect. This is definately not Mexican beach hut-type of place.
I hope this helps. Enjoy the trip!
I forgot to add to my comments, above - that there are some photos of the hotel online, but not of any rooms (don't know why). Here is what I've found:

Additionally, you'll find lots of reviews of the hotel over at www.tripadvisor.com, just search the hotel name.

the first time i saw this, i was VERY VERY concerned for the safety of snorkelers and beach dwellers alike. you will see a boat going about 25 knots, heading straight for the shore. it's not stopping. people begin to notice and start to part on the shore, and they all have scared expressions, and everyone is thinking, "is he going to stop?" then the boat skids onto shore and at the last second, the motor is lifted out of the water, and everyone is shocked and relieved that no one was killed in this maneuver. it's wild. then, the boat is pulled further onto the sand by men who use logs to roll under the boat for movement.
Another of the glorious beaches along this stretch of coast, this has a number of basic rooms and comedores with one major hotel. Real hang-out for young surfers and gap-year.
SA is on the coastal road between Ventenilla and Puerto Angelo. Buses run frequently between Mazunte and Puerto Angelo, passing San Augustinillo.
I spent around 7 weeks in Puerto off on and during my trip to Mexico. It has great beaches...fantastic surf (if you're brave enough) and good nightlife and restaurants. Still not hit by mass tourism....
I would definately suggest a 2-3 day trip to Zipolite if you passing. It's unspoilt and very relaxing. I stayed at El Alquimista cabanas which were really good. Great beach.
Seem strange having been to PE that we deliberated for so long as to whether to base ourselves in PE or in Puerto Angelo, further east along the coast. No competition! PE is, suprisingly, a low-key 'development', virtually no high-rise hotels, enough infrastructure to keep you happy, but certainly not so much that it felt as if the town had been developed purely for tourism. The surfers beach (miles of it) in the eastern part is the more developed. But with decent restaurants, a few bars and a great location to explore the coast, its a great place to unwind. And if you are into surfing - those breakers....
It's so easy going - although one slight criticism is that the 'highway' (not a particuarly large or over busy one) cuts the town in two - thus the residential part is up the hill, whilst the play area is on the other side of the highway. More pyschological than physical, but it's still there.
