Santa Maria Huatulco, main city of Huatulco...
"The ghost town of Huatulco..."
The main city of Huatulco, Santa María Huatulco, is situated 307 metres above sea level, 31 kilometres from Santa Cruz Huatulco.
Santa María Huatulco is located in the centre of Huatulco, along the outskirts of the Santa María Huatulco River.
The municipality contains several attractive sites worth mentioning, such as it magnificently constructed church, build in 1908. It contains artefacts dating back to the 18th century including the Señor de las Misericordias (Lord of Misery), an interesting figure of Christ which was worshipped here; the small, original wooden cross of Santa Cruz.
The town has also preserved the ancient market place, reminiscent of times when the market was held on a weekly basis.
For us, Santa María Huatulco was besides the church, nothing. We came, saw and left the town in about two hours. The church can be nice to see, no info is available there. The market we went over has the same things as in Santa Cruz Huatulco. So, why go for shopping there? Ok, when you are in Santa Cruz it is only a short drive to visit this bothering town…
