Travel Tips for Cholula

Relaxing Cholula

by shdw100

Cholula is known for its tremendous pyramide with the church on top. It is the largest pyramide in terms of volume in the entire world! It is also known for its churches, one church for every day of the year! The pyramide is a must see activity! There are many things about Cholula that I love, but the best part is buying a cheap ice cream, laying on the grass in the zocalo and watching the clouds go by!

3 tourists in Cholula Puebla

"3 tourists one day in Cholula"

I arrived in Mexico, La Casa De Los Amigos was my home for about 14 days before I moved with my family. I met a girl from Canada and this teacher from Philadelphia - so 3 guys, one Danish, one Canadian and one American took a daytrip to Cholula in the state of Puebla. If you guys are ever seeing this, please do write! I can't remember your names, but you will remember me if you see this photo.

Cholula was a cozy little place.

Cholula, Puebla

by CheGringo

"Cholulandia"

Cholula is a very interesting place, it is the location that has been constantly inhabited for the longest period of time in all of the Americas. Today Cholula is a city with strong contrasts, its poverty set against the wealth of the Universidad de las Americas, a private university that is one of the most expensive in Mexico.

"El Desmadre"

The diversity brought to Cholula by its students, and those of other universities in the city of Puebla, creates a very diverse and fullfilling nightlife. Cholula is quite simply a great place to go to school and be young, but I am not sure I would want to raise a family here, for that I would much rather prefer the bordering city of Puebla or another location in Mexico. Some of my favorite spots include Bombay (a small bar always full of young, beautiful people), Bambukos (cheap, large drinks), and Kilawea (the most popular club in the city).

"Location"

Cholula is in a pretty great location to travel Mexico. For starters, it is (usually) less than two hours from the Mexico City airport and all the fun of el districto federal. Cholula, home to an impressive amount of tourist attractions including the many aztec ruins, is only about a ten minute ride from the colonial city of Puebla. It is also located between the costal cities of Puerto de Veracruz, which hosts el carnaval de Veracruz, Mexico's biggest party, and Acapulco, an amazing tourist city located on the coast of Guerrero. Cholula is also less than 10 hours by bus to Oaxaca, Campeche, Chiapas and many other great locations.

The Great Pyramid and the UDLA

"No middle ground"

I'm still working on that picture thing, I'd love to put my pictures of Cholula and Puebla up....Anyway, a few years ago I did an internship at an alternative school in Cholula. I ostensibly went to write grants for them, but I ended up teaching a class of first graders...for anyone that goes there, the school is called the Centro Educativo Ixtliyollotl, and they can always use donations, of school supplies or whatever else. The CEI was across the street from the UDLA, aka the Universidad de las Americas. The juxtaposition could not have been greater. The CEI teaches the poorest children, many of indigenous background, while the UDLA is the most expensive university in Mexico. It's a beautiful campus, but it still was sad, to see the poverty so near it. I still wonder if any of the CEI's children will ever attend the UDLA. On a brighter note, the UDLA sponsors trips to other places in Mexico, particularly in the summertime when they have summer exchange students. You can get a good deal for a weekend jaunt with them, like I did when they went to Taxco and Las grutas de Cacahuamilpa.

"The Great Pyramid"

The must-see attraction in Cholula is the Great Pyramid, of course. Cholula, before the Spanish came, was a bit of a crossroads for the different indigenous peoples of Mexico. It was where they would meet to trade, and mix in general. When the Spaniards came, they had to dominate, of course, which is most visible by looking at Nuestra Senora de los Remedios, the Catholic church that sits atop the pyramid. Still, it doesn't detract from the beauty of the pyramid. I remember just standing in the center of the Plaza of the Altars, looking down at the town. It was amazing. And later, these guys came out, chatting to each other, and I realized they were speaking Nahuatl, not Spanish. The history is being kept alive. There are tunnels inside the pyramid also, I don't know if you can go inside them anymore, but they were open to the public when I was there, although I can't say I ventured back in them after the 6.7 earthquake. But hey, that pyramid's been there hundreds of years, it must have been through quite it's share of "temblors", right?
