Taxco became North Americas first mining town when silver was discover in 1524. Although the supply of silver is not as great, Taxco has become a silver artisan town. Some of the things that these people do with the silver are amazing. More than 300 shops cater to the silver shopper. The Mercado de Plata, just behind the Flecha Roja station, is where locals buy their silver so you can probably get it cheaper there. Make sure that any silver that you buy has the official ".925" stamp on the side to indicate that it's genuine silver.
