Grocery Store
Take the bus allllll the way down into Downtown Cancun; it will probably be one of the last stops. Go to the grocery store to stock up on local food and munchies. This will help keep your costs down. We do it every trip.

can anyone please tell me how the drive from cancun to belize is (safety wise)??
is this a recommended drive?
trying to save on air fair, planning to go in january '10
Saludos Marty. Yes it is a safe drive. I have done this drive when they were re-doing the road years ago. Be sure to leave early because there are many things to see and do on the way down. You must stop in TULUM to see the PYRAMID on the beach and SWIM on the beach next to it. (2Hours) Plan to see Cozumel while in CanCun as well as Playa del Carmen. Look into "Holbox" (North of CanCun). Also just south of Playa del Carmen is a place (going south on your right side) called "ACHTUNCHEN". This is a cave with extrordinary stalagtite formations. You walk in one end of cave (underground ponds etc. ) and walk out the far end (about 1KM). A must see. Also MUST swim in a CENOTE.

Are you renting a car? Last I knew, you could not take a Mexican rental car into Belize. Is this still true?
I have done this twice, - not from Cancun but from Los Angeles!! You should not have any problem with the drive, relatively short, considering where I drove from....d;o)
To get to Belize from Cancun or Playa del Carmen by bus or car, take the 1st class bus from Playa (cost approx $20 U.S) and it takes 4.5 hours to get to Chetumal. Take the 9:15am which leaves the Playa bus terminal and arrives at 2pm at Chetumal. Then have a Belizean taxi driver (approx cost $25 U.S) meet you at the Chetumal bus station who will escort you through the border to Belize into Corozal, then you can rent a car, and this way avoid the hassle from trying to take a rent a car from Mexico into Belize.
You said you ere going to Cayo, and Table Rock Resort and Jungle Lodge, correct? I believe there is a "Table Rock" time share property in Belmopan. The two are not related. I am assuming that is the reason you decided to stay inland rather than the coast or the Cayes, is this great Lodge in Cayo. You will not be dissapointed. It is magnificent. If you need any further info on Belize, let me know, and I am sure I can be of assistance, in the forum of E-Mail. Good luck.

Enjoy the strip. Start from one end, near Club Med, and walk along the beach past all the resorts. Check out the beach volleyball courts, the sunbathers, the waterskiers... Going out to the dance clubs at night, partying until 6am the next day, going to sleep, waking up mid-afternoon for some baking in the sun. And then doing it all over again!
The admission price is 75 pesos, which was about $7.50 in 2002. Of course there are many tour buses that go to the ruins. Those often cost $55/$75 person, quiet expensive!! In some of the higher end resorts a few tours are included in the price of the resort. This was the case where we stayed.
TEQUILA, MACARENA AND MARRIACHIS
The group of musician in the left picture was performing live in the street. I had to stop to listen at what they were playing. A song I've heard in the 70s' and many times after but couldn't recall the name!
So I asked those guys and even if they didn't understand english they knew exactly my question and answered all together very loudly and laughing TEQUILA !
Another strange musical encounter was one day at the pool where a bunch of tourists in bathing suits was performing a strange dance ritual under the supervision of the pool-play-master.
It looked so silly but the music was very catchy. That was my first time when I heard the soon-to-be popular dance MACARENA.
The next day I found myself in a music store trying to buy those two songs.
Tequila was easy but I couldn't find Macarena. I decided to ask the store's 2 girls which didn't speak english but after a while and me even humming the music (heh, heh) they suddenly jumped from behind the desk and shouted all together MACARENA and started to dance it at my stupefaction! That was the weirdest shopping experience I've had so far but fun to remember afterwards!!
...and here are the lyrics of MACARENA in Spanish and English and a version for MACARENA Haters (LOL)!
SpanishEnglish
Dale a tu cuerpo alegria Macarena
Que tu cuerpo es pa' darle alegria y cosa buena
Dale a tu cuerpo alegria Macarena
Ehhhh, Macarena
Macarena tiene un novio que se llama
Que se llama de apellido Vitorino
Y en la jura de bandera del muchacho
Se la dio con dos amigos
Macarena, Macarena, Macarena
Que le gusta los veranos de Marbella
Macarena, Macarena, Macarena
Que le gusta la movida guerrilera
Macarena suena con el Corte Ingles
Y se compra los mnodelos mas modernos
Le gustaria vivir en Nueva York
Y ligar un novio nuevo
Give your body pleasure, Macarena
Because your body is for giving it pleasure and good things
Give your body pleasure, Macarena
Ehhhh, Macarena
Macarena has a boyfriend whose name is
Whose last name is Vitorino
And during his military swearing in
She got together with two of his friends
Macarena, Macarena, Macarena
Who likes the summers of Marbella
Macarena, Macarena, Macarena
Who likes the guerrila lifestyle
Macarena dreams of the Corte Inglesi§
And she likes the most recent fashions
She'd like to live in New York
And trap a new boyfriend
There's only one way to prepare macaroni.
You need a little bit of spam and a lot of baloney.
I don't want no ziti or lame rigatoni
I wantttt macaroniiiiiii!!!!!
I guess you met my boyfriend
The one they call Boy-AR-dee
I don't want him
I can't stand him
He can't me satisfy no more
He tried to please me with his beefaroni
And he is a whiz with stuffed canelloni
But everything he makes is just too phony
It aiiiiiiin't macaroniiiiiiiiiiii!!!!!!

The basic meaning of Macarena is *Let's enjoy dancing*. The content of the lyrics is also *Give your body pleasure, Macarena*.
At the same time, Macarena is the name of a vain girl whom the duet singers have loved.
However, the origin of the name is a little far from the meanings shown above. Macarena is the Saint Virgin Macarena, who protects the Spanish Bull-fighters against the dead and the evil.
In Seville, the home town of Los del Rio, there is a street named Macarena.
In the streets and the churches, there are lots of pictures and status of Macarena with the bundles of flower and lightened candles to pray their wishes.
In some foreign countries, you may find a little bin in the WC with used toilet paper in it. It may seem a little unsavory, but you should really follow suit. The septic system will not be able to cope with much paper without blocking! I'm sure the cleaners would much prefer emptying a little bin, to having to mop the floor after the toilet floods....... yuck!!
The webpages below are really one of the best ones i have ever seen about customs....check before you go on holiday!
Frans didnt...and this is what happens to a person who just found out about the toiletpaper ha ha ha
