  • Great Vacation

    by

My family had a great week at this hotel, and I highly recommend it. We selected this hotel from lists on the internet, based on the offer of an excellent all-inclusive deal. The employees of the Barcelo Costa are the friendliest and most helpful we have encountered in any hotel. They clearly are working very hard to ensure that guests are well taken care of. The food was very good, the rooms were comfortable, the pool was really fun, the evening shows were very entertaining, and the hotel concierge took the time to help us plan amazing excursions around the area. We had a little problem with the drain in our sink, and I reported it to the front desk. A repairman arrived within five minutes and fixed the problem instantly.
The beach at this hotel is small, and not as spectacular as the beaches at some of the more expensive hotels, but it is easy to get a taxi or bus to several incredibly beautiful public beaches. The atmosphere of the hotel seems like that of a cruise, and there is a lot of music and party atmosphere. I would guess that the clientele of the hotel changes quite a bit depending on the season, and I personally wouldn't want to be there during spring break.
We were very happy with our choice of the Barcelo Costa Cancun, and were sad to leave when our vacation was over.

  • Sweet, sweet luxury

    by

The Gran Costa Real is far from the most luxurious resort in the hotel zone. However, if you're on a bit of a budget (like we were) you can't go past it.

The rooms are large, the beds are comfortable, the pool is huge and the beach golden. A team of dedicated young staff lead a whole bunch of different activities, from Spanish lessons, to beach volleyball, to nightly nightclub tours. These guys truly excel at their job, always so enthusiastic, funny and competitive.

The all inclusive deal is good value as long as you ensure that you eat all your meals at the resort, and then take good advantage of one of the several bars. The beer on tap is Dos Equis, so don't sign up expecting anything else.

A VIP area for those on the all inclusive deal is upstairs, but it's not particularly luxurious. A few pool tables are nice, but the self service food here is simply atrocious - stick to the restaurants downstairs.

There are a few other negatives that need noting. The beach is small - you'll need to get down there early in the morning if you want to get a deckchair. However, there are always a few chairs vacant by the pool if you're desperate for some sun.

The food is okay, but certainly nothing to write home about.

However, if you want a good time, head down the beach bar of an evening. Its no Coco Bongo, but the atmosphere is healthy, plenty of alcohol is consumed and you're certain to meet an interesting new friend or two.

Unique Quality: So you think a big resort is hardly the place for an adventure? You think wrong.

A few things to try if you're game:
    - stealing towels from the second floor linen closet without getting caught.
    - starting a game of beach cricket in the dark with random strangers.
    - chatting up the cute waitresses in either of the restaurants.

    Can't Wait To Go Back!!

    by

We stayed at the Gran Costa Real in February of this year and had a great time. We were a little aprehensive after reading some reviews on this newly rated hotel (now 5 stars, used to be 3). There were ups and downs on our first day at the resort but once it was all settled (to our satisfaction) things were great. When we arrived at the resort we were told that our room would not be ready for an hour and to enjoy the facilities, so enjoy we did. Finally at about 730/800pm we had a room. It wasn't the best but it was clean. Unfortunately the in-room safe did not work, so we trotted down to the front desk to complain. Johnny told us that they were full for the night but he would move us in the morning--until then we could use the hotel safe for our passports etc. In the morning we were moved to a spectacular room over-looking the pool and ocean. The view was absolutely amazing, and we were satisfied!! From that day on we were happy with everything the hotel had to offer. It is true that the beach is small but if you are looking for a larger beach you have access to the Gran Caribe resort just a quick bus ride away.

There are four restaurants on-site (il Pescatore, Gaviotas, Maria's and a buffet--Albatros) as well as a 24 hour snack and drink bar. The food was great--a little repetative at the buffet, but still tasty. There are enough food types to make anyone happy (from hot dogs to oysters) with plenty of fruit! We were also allowed one room service per day!

The bar staff were always attentive and ready to satisfy our needs. Housekeeping and the grounds keepers were pleasant and kept the hotel immaculate! The entertainment staff were energetic but not pushy...they always had some sort of activity going on. Everyone would meet up at the lobby bar for the nightly excursions to different bars in Cancun. All in all the staff at this hotel really knows how to treat their customers, they made my vacation so much more than I ever expected it to be!

All inclusive - you can't beat it!

    by

Our stay here was an all-inclusive. From the rooms to the food to the pool to the 5-minutes-to-the-beach access, I definitely recommend it. There's a lot to do on the premises and it's only steps from the beach. The pool is amazing and there are 2 great restaurants on either side of the pool, as well as a tiki bar right on the beach. I would definitely stay here again.

Unique Quality: Our first night there, they brought in booths of goods and held a flea market in the hotel lobby! It was great; we bargained with the guys and got some great jewelry at incredible prices.

The pool is another fabulous part of this hotel. It's a great size and the water is wonderful. One of my favorites of all time.

Nice Hotel to Introduce us to Cancun

    by

We stayed at the Costa Real Hotel for our Honeymoon in November of 2001. This was my first introduction to Cancun and I was very happy with this hotel. The rooms were clean, it is a 3 star so I didn't expect the world. The hotel is located at the northern most part of the Cancun main strip and does not have the greatest beach. The beach is very small, don't let the pictures fool you. The pool water was very cold! Staff was very friendly.

Unique Quality: Beach Bar!! Was opened until late (10 p.m. or so) when we were there. Most other hotel beach bars close by 5 p.m. which I hate! Great atmosphere at the beach bar at night just drinking and listening to the waves roll in.

Directions: Northern part of the Cancun hotel strip. About 20-25 minutes drive from the airport.

All inclusive in Cancun for a reasonable price

    by

The service was absolutly excellent! You could have drinks and food brought to your room, by the pool, or on the beach. Your glass was never empty! The rooms were quite lovely. They had; a large flat screen tv, a dvd player, a gigantic shower, balcony overlooking the pool or beach, and a king size bed. All the rooms for two people cost the same, but some have a large gazebo type balcony, which I would highly recommend requesting.

Unique Quality: The spa had a jacuzzi, sauna, and steam room. There's a small gym upstairs and you can also get a massage, but thought they were too pricey for my taste. The entertainment staff organizes games all day and provides transportation to popular clubs at night. If you love beach volleyball as I do, you can catch a game twice a day. They also have water polo and pool volleyball.

Directions: Across from La Boom between downtown and the hotel district.

Got Here Before it Became 4 Star

    by

We bought a package that was air, transfers and all-inclusive. Their motto is "Exceeding your expectations", and they certainly worked hard to that goal. The staff was very friendly and helpful, and seemed to be very big for the size of the hotel. While we were there, the lobby and restaraunt were being remodeled, so constuction noise was a little bothersome (at one point, 24 hours per day). However, we were not disturbed by it, and thoroughly enjoyed our stay.

As we got a last minute deal, it was very inexpensive, if we had to pay full price, we probably couldn't afford to stay here again.

Unique Quality: If you consider Cancùn to be shaped like a large 7, this hotel is on the top part, about 4.5 km from the town of Cancùn. The beach is quite calm, and Isla Mujeres can be viewed from the beach.

Directions: On the north side of Cancùn

Trip Report Nov. 3 - 7, 2002

by TripAdvisor Member KVR

Background:
We have been to Cozumel in July, 2000 for our honeymoon and stayed at the Club Cozumel Caribe and April, 2002 stayed at the Days Inn Villa Iguana Cozumel (this was due to a Carnival Cruise that went bad), and Playa Del Carmen in August, 2001 at El Dorado Resort and Spa. This was our first trip to Cancun.

Air:
We drove 5 hours in the rain to San Antonio, TX on Nov. 2 to make our flight on the 3rd. Flew Allegro Airlines for the first time. Was skeptical due to bad reviews of flights not being on-time, but we did not have any problems. Our flight was on-time both ways. Service was fine. Based on this experience, wouldn't hesitate to fly them again.

Hotel:
Costa Real Resort and Suites is the nicest hotel we have stayed at thus far. We had a pool view on the 5th floor. Could see a little bit of the beach area and both restaurants. We had a studio room with small kitchenette, dining table, refrigerator and king-size bed. The bathroom was a nice size and the shower was HUGE. No tub, but you could fit 6 people in the shower it was that large. Large terrace with 2 chairs and a table. Really enjoyed it. The room was nice and clean and the maids did a great job keeping it that way. It took us a minute to figure out you had to put your key card in this slot by the door to turn the electricity on as they didn't tell us that when checking in.

The swimming pool was very big and nice. It had a sunbathing island in the middle with chairs. It never got crowded and plenty of room to sit out or swim. We liked the way the pool was in the center with the hotel surrounded around it and then a few steps to the beach and restaurants. At night, the hotel gift shop would set out merchandise to sell and during the day they had a fashion show.

On Monday night there were no after dinner activities. Tuesday was Karaoke night. Lots of people watching, but not many participants. Wednesday they had a Marachi show, but we didn't stay to watch it. They also provided free shuttle service to a different in-town bar/night club every night with discount prices on drinks. Tuesday at 5:00 pm they offered a free shuttle to the Kukulcan Plaza Mall.

Beach:
The beach was small, but we really like it. It also didn't get crowded and their was plenty of chairs and papalas to use. A hotel staff member would set chairs up for you. The water was clear and much warmer than the pool. A small beach bar was connected outside of the sit-down restaurant. Though there was supposed to be beach service for the bar, we were served once all afternoon. However, it was a quick short walk to go get your own. The swimming area is roped off due to it being close to a boat docking area, but it was plenty big enough to swim and the water was pretty deep close to the ropes. We wore water shoes as getting in was somewhat rocky. We really enjoyed the pool and beach area the most.

Food and Drinks:
The food was a major disappointment. We've had much better at the other hotels we have stayed at. The sit-down restaurant had the better food, but the menu was the same everyday. The service in this restaurant was terrible. You would wait forever for the staff to take your order and get the food to you. If you wanted something else, drink refills or dessert you had to flag the waiter down to get it. Since this was the better tasting food though, we ate here mostly. We ended up eating a lot of the chicken and rice soup and tomatoes with cheese. The buffet was OK for breakfast. We ate the cooked to order omelets twice with refried beans. DH tried the pancakes and sausage the first day and was not impressed. We tried to stay away from fresh fruit and salad as last year in Playa del Carmen we ended up with Salmonella from the hotel's food. We tried the buffet on Italian night, but nothing was appealing so we went to the sit-down restaurant. We did eat the buffet on Mexican night as they had chalupas and tamales, which was pretty good.

We mostly drank Corona and bottled water. Corona is one of my favorite beers and this is the only hotel we've stayed at that served it. Drank Pina Coladas one day and didn't taste watered down. We got them from the lobby bar and saw the guy make them. They were quite good with plenty of alcohol, but if you need more just ask and they'll provided it.

Activities and Entertainment:
We went to Aqua World and did the Sub See Exployer semi sub, Jet Ski Jungle Tour with snorkeling and the Sky Rider parasailing. All was very enjoyable. The Sky Rider scared me to death. I just new we were going to fall. Will not try parasailing again.

Took an ATV tour and Speed Boat Tour at Maroma Beach in Playa del Carmen. We did ATV's last year in Playa del Carmen and had such a blast we had to do it again. This one was great. We rode through the jungle for about 45 minutes and then on the beach for about 15 minutes, then you got into the speed boat and drove for about an hour. Afterwards they gave us complimentary soda, water, and Dos XX beer with bean and cheese and tuna and cheese nacho appetizers. You could also order other alcoholic drinks for $1 and food for $3. We ordered nachos with pico and guacamole and 3 pina coladas, which only cost us $6 and it was very good. Also had 4 free beers and two plates of the appetizers and was quite full.

Went to Sr. Frogs and had a great time. DH got picked for the "Play That Funky Music White Boy" contest. There were 5 contestants and they had to get on stage and dance and the audience picked the winner. He came in 4th. It was hilarious to watch and he had a ball doing it. Went shopping at a Mexican market next to TGIFridays. Got all the souvenirs and gifts we needed at a decent price. Apparently sales had been slow the day we came and the merchants were ready to bargain. Had planned to go to the Interactive Aquarium at the La Isla Mall, but ran out of time.

Summary:
I have a major problem with hotels being overcrowded with no place to sit at the pool, beach or bars with screaming kids everywhere and we did not experience any of that at this hotel. We really enjoyed our stay even with the questionable food. We loved the beach and pool area. Though the location could have been better. The bus was convenient and cheap, but very hot with no air conditioning and quite crowded at all times of the day. If we ever decide to go to Cancun again, we would like to stay somewhere closer in the hotel zone so that walking would be an easier way to get around. Though we never stay at the same hotel twice since there are so many to experience, we would recommend this hotel. We are considering another trip sometime next year and would like to stay at their sister hotel - Gran Porto Real in Playa del Carmen and see the Mayan ruins.

Me and three of my friends had the best time at the costa Real, all you can eat and all you can drink, and believe me we did ! the staff were all friendly and the hotel was very clean. One of the best best things about it was the Beach Bar, situated next to the sea, we spent plenty of time there. The pool was very nice and so was the view around it ! ( all the nice young ladies ) to be honest there was not one bad word to say about the whole holiday. Cheers costa real the English lads will be back!!

Cancun-Nov 4-11/2007. Excursion tickets at Walmart?

by wizgal40

Hello,
My friend and I...both 40 are travelling to Cancun from Canada Nov 4-11th.WHat excursions are a must and whats the best place to buy tickets?DO you buy day before or two days before? Walmart the cheapest? We are staying at the Barcelo Costa Cancun. We want to have a great time so any pointers would be greatly appreciated.ANyone else going at same time?Woohoo!

Re: Cancun-Nov 4-11/2007. Excursion tickets at Walmart?

by melosh

Although I can not swear by personal experience in the particular case of a Walmart purchase, I would say that the closer you are to the provider the cheaper the ticket purchase will be for excursions. There will be less middlemen taking their cut or adding their fees. This also goes for the cost of buying excursion tickets from or at the Barcelo Costa Cancun. Buying in Cancun, even at the Barcelo also gives you the flexibility of time and style. You might before you arrive in Cancun, for example, think that a large group excursion would be best, but once you arrive feel a smaller group better fits your mood.
Prices are often (usually) negotiable in Mexico so be prepared to hear some high offers. Certainly exploring what the Walmart and online sellers offer can give you an idea of what you might want to do and the high end of what you might want to pay.

Have a great time. bob
