Good authentic restaurants, local shops?

by PiggiePiggie

Hi,
I'm planning on a visit to Cancun soon. I was wondering if any of you know any good authentic restaurants, local shops, and beautiful places to visit. I'm trying to mingle with the natives and to experience their culture as much as possible during my short visit there. And I'm poor so cheap places would be greatly appreciated. Thank you so much.

The more you leave the hotel zone, the more mexican it gets.

My husband used to say that the giant flag pole divides Mexico from the USD Currency Dollar zone. So, if you follow a bit that impression, you can get a quick glimpse of what's beyond our confort area.

I guess you can try looking around a market. The shops near the bus station comes to my mind. There's a lot of motion in that particular area.

If you happen to have more time and the travel bug gets you into exploring a little more without leaving the confort zone, I'd say to head to the little towns, well, let's say.. Valladolid or even Merida.

Do you think you have time for that? You would need a day for exploring this mediums size village.
You can just ask for a good "restaurante tipico" (tipico as in antojitos). Cocina Mexicana, tipica or antojitos mexicanos are your key words.

Travel Tips for Cancún

THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW

by LoriPori

CANCUN GENERAL TIPS

CLIMATE -- Semi-humid with an average 80 F (27C) temperature. Rainy season runs from May to October.

ELECTRICITY -- North American standard 110 volt current, using the same two prong plug outlet.

CURRENCY -- Pesos. American funds are widely accepted, however it is recommended that you use pesos. Money and traveller's checks may be exchanged at local banks, money exchange facilities (cambio) and at most hotels. At the bank I received 11.05 pesos for $1.00 U.S. or 1 peso = .09 U.S. At the Hotel I received 10 pesos for $1.00 U.S. or 1 peso = .10 U.S.

Phone Calls --- International calls from Mexico can be expensive. Ask for the rate before authorizing a call or providing your credit card number. For better rates, call collect. You may also use local prepaid phone cards, available at most hotels and local stores. Look for pay phones that offer low rates for calling the U.S. We saw them everywhere.

DRINKING WATER --- While most hotels purify their water, bottled water is recommended. Hans and I drank the purified water from our Hotel with no problems.

MEXICAN TOURIST CARD ---
You will be required to hand in your Mexican Tourist Card upon departure from Mexico, so keep it in a safe place.

You should go to see...

You should go to see chichinitza while you visit here. It is where the Incan's used to live and have big ball games, kind of like basketball, but instead of a big prize at the end if you won, they killed you for the gods!!

The Beach

by jholley534

This is the beach and the marina outside of the resort we stayed at. Very beautiful water and excellant snorkeling.

Almost every one wore a bathing suit, however, several women were observed sun tanning topless. I don't know what the rules are here, but you might want to find out if you are taking your children with you.

COZUMEL
A medium-sized islandwhere you can see the National Underwater Park of Palancar. If you like snorkeling, this is the place!!! The second largest coral reef in the world, here came Jacques Cousteau to film some of his famous TV docs!
But if you go for the beach, try at Chankanaab, a beautiful turquoise waters beach to rest under a palm tree (see photo).
You can reach Cozumel by plane or by boat from the coastal city of Puerto Morelos.

Harmless Chatter

by Etoile2B

As a woman, be prepared for men to catcall and talk to you on the street. They're completely harmless. It's just a cultural difference. Smile and walk away if you feel uncomfortable.

Also everyone wants to sell something to you so people will approach you constantly trying to show you their wares, give you a ride in their taxi, get you into their nightclub, etc. If you're not interested just politely respond "no gracias". No harm no foul.
